Over the past 25 years, the position of the American Jewish community, its political power and security have deteriorated at breakneck speed. Part of the problem of course is the rise of politically legitimate anti-Semitism on the political left. But part of the problem is the failure of the American Jewish leadership to fight the new anti-Semitism and defend the community.

In this week’s Mideast News Hour, I discussed the phenomenon and how it can be remedied with Charles Jacobs and Avi Goldwasser who just founded the Jewish Leadership Project in the hopes of forcing the American Jewish leadership to do its job.

Goldwasser explained that Jewish community leaders have “betrayed and failed” their constituents because they are either “cowards or delusional or both.”

We also talked about the challenges leaders face – their fears of both losing their jobs, harming relations with donors and simply not knowing what to do.

Jacobs explained that when anti-Semitism rises, a lot of people run away – including Jewish leaders. “They’re paralyzed,” according to Jacobs. “They’re like deer in the headlights. The train is coming, and they are stuck.”

Join us for a critical discussion about the state of the American Jewish community and what must — and can — be done to secure and save it.
