This week on the Tribal Update, the satirical newscast produced weekly by Latma, the Hebrew-language, satirical media criticism website I run we bring you Tawil Fadiha from Fatah, (the PA’s Minister of Uncontrollable Rage) and Ismail Haniyeh, Gaza head of Hamas extolling the virtue of each other’s terror organizations and embracing the cause of peace a solicitude – in English!

We also bring you an interview with the radical leftist, friend of the Supreme Court and celebrity investigative journalist Ilana Dayan who some years back broadcast an “investigation” in which she asserted that an IDF Captain murdered a Palestinian girl and then shot up her body to ensure she was dead. Captain R, as he became known was found innocent of all charges, and it worked out that one of his soldiers, who hated him had made up the entire story.
Captain R sued Dayan and her channel Telad for libel and won in District Court. Dayan’s friends at the Supreme Court overturned the District Court’s decision last week by inventing a new defense for libel. They said that Dayan spoke the “truth of the hour.” That is, at the time, she thought what she was saying was true and so was within her rights to say it.
In her broadcast, she interspersed her claims with footage that had nothing to do with the story, including a video of R and his soldiers celebrating at a party a few weeks before the girl was killed to make it look like they were celebrating her death.

In a bit of personal news, as Tawil and Ismail mention at the end of the show, I had a baby boy on Monday and will be on maternity leave from the Jerusalem Post for the next three months. (Unless there’s a war or something.)
