Despite a multi-million dollar media blitz, Israelis are not buying the US-financed Geneva Initiative’s attempt to convince us that we have a Palestinian partner. A week after the pro-Palestinian group launched its massive online promotion urging people to join its Facebook page, a mere 634 people had answered the call.

The US-funded agitprop involved ads in which senior Fatah propagandists were featured telling Israelis we can trust them this time around. The reason for its failure was made clear by a public opinion poll taken Tuesday night for Channel 10. When asked if they believed that Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas is serious about making peace with Israel, two-thirds of Israelis said no. Only 23 percent said he was serious and 17 percent said they didn’t know.

Moreover, most Israelis have had it with the peace paradigm based on Israeli concessions of land and national rights in exchange for Palestinian terror and political warfare. When asked whether the government should extend the prohibition on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria beyond its Sept 26 terminus, 63 percent said no, it should not. A mere 21 percent of the public believes the government should respond positively to the US demand that Jews continue to be denied our property right in Judea and Samaria.

In his analysis of the results, Channel 10’s senior political commentator Raviv Drucker said that if Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu decides to make a deal with the Palestinians, he will have a hard time convincing the public to support him.

Drucker also argued that the results may have been influenced by the Palestinian terror attack on Tuesday night in which four civilians were brutally murdered on their way home from Jerusalem. That is, Drucker implied that the public is driven by its emotions. But what the results actually show is that the public is driven by reason.

When Palestinian terrorists gun down innocent people on the highway simply because they are Jews, the public’s reasoned response is to say that the Palestinians do not want peace. The public’s wholly rational reaction to this act of anti-Jewish butchery is to insist that Jews should not be denied our basic civil and human rights in a dangerous bid to appease murderers.

The poll’s final question regarded Netanyahu and his intentions at the new round of land for peace negotiations in Washington. Slightly more than half of the public believes that Netanyahu is serious in his pursuit of a deal with the Palestinians and a mere 34 percent believe that he is not serious.

This last response is interesting for two reasons. First it is a strong indication that the public trusts Netanyahu’s word. Since taking office a year and a half ago, Netanyahu has said repeatedly that he supports making a deal with Fatah. And a majority of the public believes him.

The second conclusion suggested by the result is more discouraging. With the public convinced that the Palestinians are not to be trusted and that Israel should stop making concessions, the majority of the public believes that Netanyahu is moving in the opposite direction. Netanyahu’s statements in Washington give us ample reason for concern.

ON WEDNESDAY evening, ahead of a dinner at the White House with US President Barack Obama, Abbas, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan’s King Abdullah, Netanyahu made a startling statement.

He said, “I have been making the case for Israel all my life. But I did not come here to win an argument. I came here to forge a peace. I did not come here to play a blame game where even the winners lose. I came here to achieve a peace that will bring benefits to all.”

This statement is worth considering carefully. Does Netanyahu truly believe that by “making the case for Israel” he and others who speak out in defense of Israel have merely been argumentative?

Does he think that defending Israel’s rights diminishes the prospects for peace and so those that defend Israel are actually harming it?

Does he believe that in calling the Palestinians out for their brutality, barbarism and hatred of Jews and Israel he and his fellow advocates for Israel have merely been playing a blame game?

Does he think that a peace forged on the basis of ignoring Israel’s case will be a viable peace?

If Netanyahu does believe all of these things – and his statement on Wednesday evening indicates he does, then the public should be very worried. Indeed, if this is what the premier believes, then it is just a matter of time before he begins echoing his predecessor Ariel Sharon and tells us that we are too dimwitted to understand him because the world looks different from where he is sitting than from our lowly perches on the ground, in Israel.

AND THIS brings us back to Tuesday evening’s highway massacre. Predictably, the Obama administration led the way in framing the terrorist violence as a bid by Hamas to derail the newest round of negotiations. For example, after meeting with Netanyahu Wednesday Obama said, “The tragedy that we saw yesterday where people were gunned down on the street by terrorists who are purposely trying to undermine these talks is an example of what we’re up against.”

The only party that rejected the administration’s rationalization of the attack was Hamas, whose operatives reportedly carried it out. In an interview Thursday with the London-based Asharq al Awsat, Hamas leader Mahmoud A-Zahar said that the talks have nothing to do with the attack. As he put it, “The bid to link this operation to the negotiations is completely wrong. When people have the opportunity, the capability and the targets, they act.”

The truth is probably found neither in A-Zahar’s claim nor in Obama’s assertion. In all likelihood, Hamas was testing the waters. Iran’s Palestinian proxy wanted to know whether the regular rules for peace processes have kicked into gear yet. Those rules — as the families of the hundreds of Israelis murdered by Palestinian terrorists during the peak years of peace processes will attest — involve Israel giving free rein to terrorists to murder Jews during “peace talks.”

Since Yitzhak Rabin first shook Yassir Arafat’s hand on the White House lawn 17 years ago, successive prime ministers have opted to not to retaliate for murderous attacks when peace talks are in session. They have justified their willingness to give the likes of Hamas a free hand to murder by claiming that fighting back would be tantamount to allowing terrorists to hold the peace process hostage. Conducting counter-terror campaigns in the midst of negotiations, they have uniformly argued, would endanger the talks and so, Hamas, Fatah and Islamic Jihad must all be given a carte blanche to murder.

Echoing these sentiments precisely, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi and Shin Bet Director Yuval Diskin all reportedly objected to launching any response to Tuesday’s attack. According to the media, the three closed ranks against Netanyahu who reportedly wished to attack Hamas targets in Gaza following the massacre.

Wednesday’s roadside shooting attack, in which a man and his wife were wounded, was a clear indication that Hamas and its ilk received the message. Just as A-Zahar said, they are a
lways looking for an opportunity. And in not responding to Tuesday’s attack, Israel told them that for the duration of these negotiations, Hamas can again kill with impunity.

Whether Hamas renewed its terror attacks this week because it likes to murder Jews, because it was trying to derail negotiations or because it was testing Israel, the fact of the matter is that from Hamas’s perspective, it stood only to gain from attacking. Terror is always popular with the Palestinian public. As the Jerusalem Post reported on Wednesday, when news broke of Tuesday’s attack, mobs of Palestinians in Judea and Samaria took to the streets to celebrate.

Part of the reason that Palestinians love terrorism is because they have never had to pay a real price for killing Jews. To the contrary, they have been richly rewarded. The Palestinians believe that it was terror, not negotiations that convinced Israel to withdraw from Gaza. So too, as they glance at the international response to their acts of wanton murder, they see terror has only benefitted them. International monetary assistance and political support for the Palestinians have always risen as terror levels peaked.

Obama’s insistence that the talks go on after Tuesday’s attack showed the Palestinians that the game is still theirs to win. The US will continue to side with the Palestinian demands against Israel regardless of their behavior.

IN NETANYAHU’S defense, his speech on Wednesday evening was not simply a repudiation of his life’s work on behalf of Israel. Netanyahu seemed to hedge his bets when he said, “We left Lebanon, we got terror. We left Gaza, we got terror. We want to ensure that territory we concede will not be turned into a third Iranian sponsored terror enclave aimed at the heart of Israel. That is why a defensible peace requires security arrangements that can withstand the test of time and the many challenges that are sure to confront us.”

The problem with this statement is that in light of the free pass he gave Hamas for Tuesday’s attack, Netanyahu already conceded this crucial principle. If he believes that the only way for the talks to advance is to stand down in the face of attack rather than aggressively strike back, then Netanyahu has already committed himself to a peace that will create “a new Iranian sponsored terror enclave aimed at the heart of Israel.”

Likewise, if he believes that only by ceasing to make Israel’s case can he make progress with his “partner” Abbas, then Netanyahu has already conceded his demand that a peace agreement contain security arrangements that will defend Israel’s national rights and other vital interests.

The most distressing aspect of Netanyahu’s enthusiastic participation in a process the Israeli public rationally opposes is that it is him doing it. With Netanyahu now joining the ranks of those that attack Israel’s defenders as enemies of peace and claim that defending the country is antithetical to peace, who is left to defend us?

“… who is left to defend us?”
That’s the good news. He who never slumbers nor sleeps defends Israel, not the IDF. If this were not true, does it really matter if Iran gets nuclear weapons? Since it is true, does it really matter if Iran gets nuclear weapons?

I have been reading your thoughts for a while, Caroline. Being a feckless/effete/etc. European, I disagree with most of what you say, of course, but I always find your columns informative beyond what one can find in the mainstream media.
Given these current peace talks, I thought I would ask: as someone thoroughly committed to the hawkish Israeli point of view, what would be your ideal, preferred solution to the dispute? One-state, two-state (on which of the several sets of borders proposed over the years?) reintegration of Gaza and the West Bank into Jordan and Egypt, something else entirely?
I’d be curious to read, without being adversarial or baiting, the preferred overall outcome for a true Israeli partisan.

    RE: Estaban
The proper solution is a undivided Jewish state with an undivided Jerusalem as its capital. Where the basic rights of LAW ABIDING Jewish, non-Jewish citizens and resident aliens are respected. Where terrorists and their supporters are agressively targeted using the appropriate law enforcement, military, and intelligence agencies for removal from the land. The lands forfeited in the past (i.e. Gaza) to terrorist organizations or enemy nations would be reconquered and annexed in any future wars with these terrorist organizations and their state sponsors until reaching the ultimate borders prophecied in the bible. Israel will never surrender any territory conquered that falls with-in the ultimate bordaries of Israel prophecied in the bible (so-called Greater Israel.) The Jewish state would declare to the world the Israel was given by GOD to the jewish people to settle for the good of the people of Israel and ultimately for the redemption of every nation and people on Earth. This is the solution that is logical and reasonable and in line with God’s commandments.

This week saw the brutal murder of four Jews outside of Hebron. The Paleostinian ( not a typo ) barbarians saw fit to empty an automatic weapon into a nine month pregnant woman. This nazi-like behavior is nothing new. In 1929, before the State of Israel was established, Jews also lived in Hebron. In 1929 the muslims of Hebron went on a rampage hacking men, women and children to death. Later in a eulogy to those victims of hatred the first Chief Rabbi of Israel , Rabbi A.I. Kook, gave the following address. His words are as true today as they were when spoken in 1930.
” The holy martyrs of Hebron do not need a memorial service. The Jewish people can never forget the holy and pure souls who were slaughtered by murderers and vile thugs. Rather, we must remember and remind the Jewish people not to forget the city of the Patriarchs. The people must know what Hebron means to us.
We have a tradition that “The actions of the fathers are signposts for the children” (Nachmanides, Gen. 12:6). When the weak-hearted spies arrived at Hebron, they were frightened by the fierce nations that lived in the land. But ‘Caleb quieted the people for Moses. He said, ‘We must go forth and occupy the land — we can do it!” (Num. 13:30) Despite this terrible tragedy that took place in Hebron, we announce to the world, “Our strength now is like our strength then.” We will not abandon our holy places and aspirations.
Hebron is the city of our fathers, the city of the Machpeilah cave where our Patriarchs are buried. It is the city of David, the cradle of our sovereign monarchy. Those who discourage the ones trying to rebuild the Jewish community in Hebron with arguments of political expedience; those who scorn and say, ‘What are those wretched Jews doing?’; those who refuse to help build Hebron — they are attacking the very roots of our people. In the future they will need to give account for their actions. If ruffians and hooligans have repaid our kindness with malice, we have only one eternal response: Jewish Hebron will once again be built, in honor and glory!
The inner meaning of Hebron is to draw strength and galvanize ourselves with the power of Netzach Yisrael, Eternal Israel. That proud Jew, Caleb, announced years later, “I am still strong… as my strength was then, so is my strength now” (Joshua 14:11). So too, we announce to all: our strength now is as our strength was then. We shall reestablish Hebron in even greater glory, with peace and security for every Jew. With God’s help, we will merit to see Hebron completely rebuilt, speedily in our days.”
    Amen.

As you alluded to the arrogance of leadership and how P.M. Sharon bulldozed everyone and everything in his quest to please Washington so does Netanyahu suffer from the same always fatal disease.
Netanyahu is now OK with worthless agreements and false promises from the globalist elite and their final 2 state solution.
It’s going to take some extreme and serious suffering for Israel to rise up and end this lie.
Netanyahu reportedly told his close advisers that what the negotiations needed now was “not a multitude of advisers, but leaders making decisions. The newspapers want headlines, but I want another worthless agreement not worth the paper it’s printed on.”
It was also agreed that the content of the talks would remain discreet and that both sides would refrain from leaking information to the media in order to keep the people of Israel in the dark as to the depth of betrayal and treachery quisling Netanyahu has prepared for them.
Mitchell concluded by saying both leaders agreed that the negotiation would be competed in one year’s time, with the aim of eradicating Israel in four phases or the sanitized version, ‘achieving a comprehensive peace agreement’.
    4 Phased Plan
1.Use peace process to weaken and restrain Israel and grow formidable Palestinian army in Israel’s heartland and empower extremist left Jewish enemy within to go after everyone opposed to two state final solution.Ignore growing Hamas,Fatah threat to Israel and focus on Jewish home builders, aka settlers.
Pressure Israel not to strike back(for the peace) or only attack empty buildings, abandoned tunnels and farm fields as we see with Netanyahu’s failure to hit Hamas headquarters as reprisal for recent murders and attacks in Judea and Samaria.
2.Cut Israel in half to give Islamic Army a contiguous state from Gaza to Judea and Samaria and cut Jerusalem in half ensuring attacks and war in Israel’s truncated Capitol, thereby demoralizing the Jews herded to their slaughter again.
    3. Continue to arm and train Islamic Army in heart of Israel and station NATO,US or UN buffer army to protect Islamic army from being defeated by Israel.
    4. Demand more concessions and goodwill gestures, surrender of land, removal of all Jews and their cities from land for their ghettoising and methodically planned eradication. (or the sanitized version of ‘achieving a comprehensive peace agreement’)
The Jews always fall for it (death wrapped in worthless peace papers) and will never wake up until it’s too late. All you have to do is look at right wing leader Netanyahu to see how far down Israel has fallen for our comprehensive peace. lol, hahaha, snicker, snicker.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge
    Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being My priest
Since you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children.
    Since Israel is stubborn
    Like a stubborn heifer,
Can the LORD now pasture them
Like a lamb in a large field?
    Ephraim is joined to idols;
    Let him alone.
    Their liquor gone,
    They play the harlot continually;

For I will be like a lion to Ephraim
And like a young lion to the house of Judah
I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away,
I will carry away, and there will be none to deliver.
I will go away and return to My place
    Until they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face;
In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.

Gee, an Israeli politician who betrays the people who voted for him, what a surprise.
You just can’t seem to get it – our politicians are crap. Our whole political culture, our political elites, in every sector, be it gov’t. or the media, or academia, even the Defense establishment, they suck. Nothing but hacks, mediocrities, at best. At worst, just self-serving parasites & self-important jerks who don’t give a damn about ordinary people.
But, the real fault is on our shoulders, the Israeli electorate, because we tolerate this BS dysfunctional political system, we’re a nation of sheep, complacent & masters at self-deception. You thought Netanyahu was the hero on a white horse who would save us, you supported him & urged others to vote Likud. You weren’t alone, I had lots of friends who said the same thing. I laughed at them for falling for the big speeches & tough talk of Netanyahu the candidate. The signs were there but rationalized away. But, what’s the use, he’ll do whatever he wants & he’s a slippery politician, he’ll make lots of crappy speeches & he’ll still fool plenty of people.

Caroline. I am a big fan of yours. I have always been the first to praise your bravery and unwavering effort to expose truth. I have to say however after watching your latest Latma when you more or less blamed the comments made by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef on the left I gave pause.
No matter what in all the years of your commentary you always maintained the high road. You didn’t ever stoop to name calling or wishing bad things even on bad people! Rabbi Yosef’s comments were out of line because we as Jews are better then that even better then the outrageous ideological outrages by the left!

Caroline, again I thank you for putting the issues at hand in their proper perspectives. May I go one step further? This land Israel belongs to us, the Jews. G-d “gave” this land to us. We did not conquer it. This includes all land; Judea and Samaria, Gaza and the entire Jerusalem. We have always fought fire with fire and our faith has always seen us through. Today it seems that a small percentage of Jews including those in the government feel we must appease. Whom must we appease; the US government headed by Barack Obama, a Muslim lover and his henchmen? Or is it Hamas and Fatah, who would do better to fight each other to the death? Of course, we can’t omit the Jewish left who obviously have forgotten their history and are seemingly oblivious to the terrible events of the past few days in Israel. As I and any “rational” Jew or non Jew sees, it is again time to fight fire with fire and put our trust in the Creator. He will ensure our peace. Shabbat shalom

The peace talks are again a charade. Stephen Pollard in the National Post, Canada, says Israel will seek deal if U.S. tackles nuclear threat.
    Peace talks all about Iran
    http://www.nationalpost.com/todays-paper/Peace+talks+about+Iran/3476007/story.html
To Israeli eyes, Mr. Obama seemed to have an entirely skewed reading of the situation, regarding them as the sole obstacle to peace, refusing to visit but keen to cozy up to as many Palestinian, Muslim and Arab leaders as possible, deaf to any arguments from Israeli diplomats and politicians about the difficulties of negotiations with the Palestinians.
Mr. Obama thought he could bully Mr. Netanyahu into action. Under Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, he thought, the United States had been too parti pris on the Israeli side; time to redress the balance and convince the Palestinians they could trust their future to him.
All he achieved, though, was to convince many Israelis that now even America was against them. The prospect of worthwhile negotiations looked ever more remote, with the Israelis cool and the Palestinians reluctant.
But over the intervening months, wiser heads within the administration — such as Hillary Clinton — have begun to hold sway and there has been a twin-pronged strategy: a noticeably warmer stance toward the Israelis and a realpolitik discussion about objectives –such as Iran.
…The most worrying myth, however, is that having talks must be better than not having talks. Talks are wonderful when they succeed. But when they fail, they tend to make things far worse.

If, as you say, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi and Shin Bet Director Yuval Diskin, refused to uphold justice for those murdered Tuesday, it was probably wise of Netanyahu to go along (what other choice was there). By his speech, he puts the responsibility for peace on the Palestinians. He’s walking the tightrope. This does no harm as long as he jumps off at precisely the one and only “correct” instant, a feat that is probably impossible. My guess is that Netanyahu is buying time. Muslims are encouraged to lie by their Scriptures, so what future do they have among civilized men? My guess is that their petro-dollars had a lot to do with putting Obama in the White House. If the November US elections do not cause a sea-change in the US in January, we will all be in hell.

My price is simple. The expulsion of Hamas members and affiliaes to Gaza. Nothing else will touch them.
Netanyahu has not changed. He is the same 1996 Netanyahu who can show a brave face to Israel but quails under the US president’s steady gaze. He is waiting for the terror to slide westwards, start claiming lives in the coastal region, because he needs the Left to demand a real solution, beause only the Left can do the Right thing.

Bill Clinton said Tuesday that forcing Israel to surrender Judea and Samaria to the American-backed Palestinian Authority would take away much of the motivation for terrorism around the world. He described the long-running Arab-Israeli conflict as the key problem in the region and said resolving it would have a knock on effect that could result in Syria ending its support for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and Iran turning back its controversial nuclear program. “It will take about half the impetus in the whole world — not just the region, the whole world — for terror away.”
