On Thursday the South Korean government did something important. It told the truth about North Korean aggression. On March 26, a North Korean submarine attacked a South Korean naval corvette with a torpedo. Forty-six South Korean sailors were killed in the unprovoked attack. And on May 20, the South Koreans ended all ambiguity about the nature of the attack and placed the blame where it belongs.

In its write-up of South Korea’s statement, The Los Angeles Times assessed that South Korea’s acknowledgment of North Korea’s murderous aggression will return the region to the days of the Cold War. The paper quoted Prof. Kim Keun-sik from Kyungnam University outside Seoul claiming that in the period to come, North Korea and China will face off against South Korea and the US.

Sadly for South Korea, while China can be depended upon to block the passage of effective sanctions against North Korea in the UN Security Council and to take any other necessary action to protect the North Korean regime, South Korea cannot expect the US to take action to rein in North Korean aggression. For while the South Korean government acknowledged reality on Thursday morning, the US under President Barack Obama remains in reality denial mode.

It is true that on Thursday Obama released a statement saying that the “act of aggression is one more instance of North Korea’s unacceptable behavior and defiance of international law.” And it is true that the international media is pointing to the White House announcement as an indication that the US will stand with South Korea.

But the Obama administration’s relations with China on the one hand, and its emasculation of the US Navy on the other demonstrate that the US will not defend South Korea against North Korean aggression. The administration’s actions in the days leading up to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak announcement make this clear.

Lee reportedly told Obama on Tuesday that his government’s investigation of the attack proved beyond a shred of doubt that North Korea had attacked the ship. Wednesday the State Department announced that next week Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be making a weeklong visit to Asia.
Clinton’s trip includes one day in Japan, one day in South Korea and five days in China. Clinton’s trip to China will center on advancing the US’s aim of ensuring that China continues to finance the US’s national debt. Given the US’s priorities, it is impossible to imagine the White House taking any forthright action against Pyongyang.

IN A related matter, the Obama administration spent the better part of the week congratulating itself for convincing China and Russia to back another sanctions resolution against North Korea’s ally Iran. In what the administration is presenting as a great diplomatic victory, Beijing and Moscow agreed to back a sanctions resolution against Iran in the UN Security Council for its refusal to end its illicit uranium enrichment.

Unfortunately, Obama’s great achievement will have no impact on Iran. If they are even passed the sanctions outlined in the draft resolution include little in the way of binding provisions. If they are passed, they will have a negligible impact on Iran’s economy and no impact on its nuclear weapons program.

Moreover, Brazil’s and Turkey’s deal to enrich uranium for Iran wrecks any chance that the US will gain its sought-for unanimity in the Security Council against Iran. Even if the sanctions resolution passes, it will be Pyrrhic victory for the US which will have destroyed its credibility as a negotiator with its allies and its enemies alike.

Beyond all that, Thursday we learned that as a payoff for China’s support for its toothless sanctions resolution, the Obama administration has made a deal that enables nuclear proliferation. According to the Washington Post, in exchange for China’s support for the resolution, the Obama administration has turned a blind eye to Beijing’s continued nuclear proliferation activities to Pakistan.

Pakistan has been a major source of nuclear and ballistic missile technologies to Iran and North Korea. Yet the administration has reportedly opted not to oppose China’s decision to build two more nuclear reactors in Pakistan.

In its frenetic bid to court China whose dollars it needs to finance its massive increase in federal spending, the Obama administration has downplayed not only China’s nuclear proliferation but North Korea’s nuclear proliferation as well. Last week North Korea announced that it conducted a successful fusion experiment. That is, it announced that it is developing a hydrogen bomb. Rather than condemn the move, the administration dismissed the danger claiming that North Korea was lying.

And just as it makes light of the threat emanating from North Korea, so the US has continued to downplay the threat Iran’s nuclear program poses to US and global security. Due to the US’s failure to end Iran’s uranium enrichment, according to the most optimistic Western assessments, Iran will have enough enriched uranium to produce atomic bombs at will in a matter of months.

If the Turkish-Brazilian uranium enrichment deal with Iran goes through, the timeline will be cut by half. Given the new deal’s similarity to the offer Obama made the Iranians last year, the administration will have great difficulty discrediting it or even providing a coherent explanation for its opposition to the deal.

AS FOREIGN Minister Avigdor Lieberman noted in his trip to Japan earlier in the month, North Korea does not only threaten its immediate neighbors. Through its proliferation activities, and particularly through its close ties to Iran and its Syrian, Hizbullah and Hamas clients, North Korea constitutes a threat to the Middle East and indeed to global security as a whole. It is important for the US’s spurned allies in Tokyo, Seoul and beyond to join forces with Israel to contend with the threats we share – threats which the Obama administration’s diplomatic bungling has only exacerbated.

But while it is true that North Korea’s proliferation activities threaten global security, it is also true that there is a qualitative difference between the regimes in Pyongyang and Teheran. The regime in Pyongyang is evil, but it is mainly motivated by its desire to survive. In contrast, Iran’s regime is openly revolutionary. Its stated aim is to destroy the global order, annihilate Israel and the US and usher in a Shiite messianic era in which Iran will rule the world in the name of Islam.

Depressingly, just as the Iranian threat is greater than the North Korean threat, so the Obama administration’s denial of the nature of the Iranian threat is greater than its denial of the North Korean threat. Quite simply, the Obama administration refuses to believe the ideology which informs the actions of Iran’s rulers is what they say it is.

In its latest demonstration of its deep denial of the nature of the threat it faces, this week John Brennan, Obama’s chief advisor for counterterrorism and homeland security said that the US must court what he referred to as “moderate elements,” in Hizbullah.

Brennan argued that since in addition to its Iranian commanded and supplied military organization and its Iranian commanded and trained international terror network, Hizbullah also has members in the Lebanese government and parliament,
it is a group that the Obama administration can do business with.

To the extent that Brennan’s statement echoes the Obama administration’s analysis of Hizbullah, it is simply terrifying.

Hizbullah was established by Iran in 1981. It has a dual mission of serving as the advance guard of Iran’s global Islamic revolution and of spreading the Iranian revolution to Lebanon. Hizbullah’s participation in Lebanese politics is consonant with this mission. It does not in any way indicate a moderation of the organization. Had Brennan looked, he would not have found a single statement by Hizbullah parliamentarians or government ministers that in any way contradicts Hizbullah’s Iranian-dictated missions.

But then, Brennan’s asinine position on Hizbullah is part and parcel of his overall denial of the threat radical Islam poses to the US and to the rest of the world. In a speech at New York University last August, Brennan gave a stirring defense of Islam as a religion of peace. He eschewed any connection between the likes of al Qaida and the Iranian mullahs and Islam and claimed that jihad is a great and good thing.

In his words, “Using the legitimate term jihad, which means to purify oneself or to wage a holy struggle for a moral goal [to describe the cause for which Islamic terrorists fight], risks giving these murderers the religious legitimacy they desperately seek but in no way deserve.”

What Brennan’s statements show is that Obama, who picked Brennan to serve as his chief counterterrorism advisor, is ideologically committed to the notion that Iran and its fellow jihadists are not an inherent threat to the US and its allies. That is, Obama is ideologically committed to the notion that there is no reason to take any action against Iran that could actually prevent the likes of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hassan Nasrallah from developing and deploying nuclear weapons.

SINCE OBAMA took office nearly a year and a half ago, Israel has agreed to Obama’s demand that it allow him to take the lead on international efforts to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. Israel stood back as he wasted a year trying to woo Ahmadinejad often at Israel’s own expense as he linked Iran’s nuclear weapons program to the Palestinian conflict with Israel. Israel has stood back since then as he pushed forward UN sanctions.

And now, a year and a half later, Obama’s sanctions gambit is revealed as a dangerous joke. Iran is months away from the bomb. Hizbullah has an arsenal of guided missiles capable of hitting Tel Aviv and beyond. Iran’s diplomatic stature has soared to unprecedented heights as it runs diplomatic circles around Obama and his advisors. And Brennan wants to make a deal with Hizbullah.

South Korea’s acknowledgment of North Korea’s aggression places it on a collision course with the Obama administration which prefers to court Beijing for dollars than deal effectively with Pyongyang’s aggression. Israel has been on a collision course with Washington for a year and a half now as it insists in the face of US opposition that Iran’s nuclear program is the greatest threat to global security today.

Sadly, the US’s ridiculous sanctions resolution and its general diplomatic incompetence make clear is that it is time for Israel to risk escalating its crisis with Obama still further. It is time for Israel to take the lead in the international campaign to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

    Due to enormous budget deficits, the US is obligated to China for nearly a trillion dollars. The Obama Administration must appease China, so its huge entitlement programs can be financed. Consequently, the US will enable Iran and North Korea to strengthen their evil axis and nuclear programs. Both Israel and South Korea will have to fend for themselves, as US influence is waning. Any sanctions authorized by the UN will be ineffective in deterring Iran’s nuclear program. Israel and South Korea will be the courageous nations who defeat their enemies.

    How could the cream of the crop,an advisor like John Brennan or a leader like Obama who presides over the greatest nation ever to exist on the earth be reduced to such invertebrate idiots,stumbling from one disaster to the next exuding incredible mind numbing incompetence and empty,meaningless rhetoric ?
    Here’s how.
    ‘In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
    Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be built again; He shuts a man in, and none can open. With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.
    He leads princes away spoiled, and overthrows the mighty.
    He pours contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.
    He increases the nations, and destroys them:he enlarges the nations, and shrinks them again.
    He takes away understanding from the leaders of the people of the land and of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no path.
    They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them to stagger and wander like a drunken man.’
    Job 12
    There is something in play here much bigger than we little mortals.
    Thus says the Lord: Cursed [with great evil] is the strong man who trusts in and relies on frail man, making weak [human] flesh his arm, and whose mind and heart turn aside from the Lord.
    Jeremiah 17:5
    We can now see the utter insanity of trusting in anyone other than God…. I hope !

    Obama’s foreign policy is making Carter look relatively brilliant. Carter gave the Panama Canal away to a drug lord. He stabbed the Shah of Iran in the back and encouraged the Iranian Revolution. He encouraged a socialist revolution in Nicaragua that ended with Communist mass murderers in charge. Those are just his biggest “accomplishments.”
    The Obama puppet (with Soros and other shady billionaires pulling the strings) seems set to stab South Korea and Taiwan in the back. I especially pity South Korea. At least China is not insane.
    He is stabbing Israel in the back, but Israel has nuclear weapons and a world-class military. Israel will not go quietly to its fate.
    I fear for the life of the United States. God has allowed us to place the Marx Brothers in charge of our government. What must the old KGB goon Putin think of these fools?

    Ms. Glick’s analysis is accurate and quite depressing. The mistake, however, is to attribute our situation to Obama’s incompetence. I think he is accomishing precisely what he desires: to bring America down, to help elevate our enemies. This is what his mentors would have wanted and I pray the American people yet have the wisdom to turn him and his party out in time to right the wrongs he has perpetrated. Our opportunities will come in the elections of 2010 and 2012. If America misses this opportunity, we’ll never have another one. Will Israel survive this? Only God knows.

    Another day, another betrayal of Western civilization. At least Neville Chamberlain had the courage to face the realization that he had been wrong about his “peace for our time” sentiments and declared war on Germany when it invaded Poland.
    The deliberate sinking of the South Korean ship by the North Koreans was an act of war and should have been treated as such. Sanctions and other such puffery are absolutely useless against Kim Jong-il‘s gangster state and are only an excuse to avoid doing the right thing. The only proper response for the continuous and outrageous actions of the North is the obliteration of its navy, the slaughter of its army, the destruction of its air force and the execution of its leader.
    South Korea, like Israel, can expect no help from the United States in combating an enemy sworn to destroy it. The South is a modern industrial state and it should have no trouble making its own nuclear weapons to counter those in the North. Perhaps a benevolent exchange of nuclear know-how between Israel and South Korea would be in order.

    This is the obverse of “Don’t attribute to evil what can be explained by stupity” I concur that he desires to lay the republic low. The day after the N. Korean attack, a number of blogs reported that this was indeed a military attack on S. Korea. The idea was shot down as just another ”right-wing conspiracy theory” & every effort was made by Washington & the media lap-dogs to play down the incident.
    Now that the truth is known, months after the event, you can bet nothing at all will be done, there will be no consequences to N. Korea.
    On the contrary, most likely, some time will go by & there will be another push to have ”dialogue” with N. Korea. In today’s world, dialogue actually means offering bribes to N. Korea. And, make no mistake, N. Korean arms sales to other rogue states will continue as before. South Korea cannot face up to N. Korea without backing from the US & such backing will not be forthcoming.
    The US push for sanctions against Iran are a joke. The deal with Brazil & Turkey has been correctly called a ”ruse” by Charles Krauthammer. DebkaFile had a pretty good analysis as well, so did Barry Rubin. It is crystal clear that the US will do absolutely nothing to stop Iran. There was a report at DebkaFile among others that the US was sending more aircraft carriers to the Persian Gulf. My guess is that this is to reassure a very nervous Saudi Arabia & at the same time, mollify the adults at the Pentagon who fear for the safety of American troops in the region in the event of hostilities.
    Yesterday, I saw a video clip at PJTV entitled, ”High Stakes For Israel” an interview with Gen.Paul Vallely (ret.) on the activities of Hezbollah, missiles with chemical warheads, tunnels into northern Israel, & the possibility of a summer war at the instigation of Iran. It’s a chilling analysis.
    Calling for some ”international” reaction to stop Iran is just wishful thinking. Iran is tightening the noose around Israel’s neck & no one will lift a finger. And, I fear that we will do nothing either. It is my feeling that as long as Ehud Barak is Defense Minister, we will sit & wait for an attack against us.
    Sorry for the pessimism, but we seemingly have no real leadership, Netanyahu is no leader, just a political hack, another crap politician.
    He is wasting his time & energy with this Palestinian charade, something which is of little importance considering circumstances.
    When you act like a loser, you will be treated like a loser. And these days, and for quite a while now, Israel walks around with a ”kick me” sign pinned to our tuchas.

    No they’re not but they are engaged in a long-term, covert, strategic campaign of aggression against the US. Connect the dots; As Caroline pointed out, “China has decided to build two more nuclear reactors in Pakistan.” and “Pakistan has been a major source of nuclear and ballistic missile technologies to Iran and North Korea.”
    China is facilitating Pakistan, who is facilitating N. Korea’s pursuit of the Hydrogen bomb, which is a ‘city killer’…

    Bill K. on May 22, 2010 2:28 AM said,
    “…The deliberate sinking of the South Korean ship by the North Koreans was an act of war and should have been treated as such.”
    +++
    Bill, the Korean war did not come to an end in the 1950’s.
    The Korean hot war of the 1950’s, merely meandered into an armistice [i.e. a truce] that has ‘survived’ until today.
    Examining that parallel between the conflict involving the two Korea’s, and, ISLAM and the rest of the non-ISLAMIC world, a state of war [with periods of truce] must also exist, and has existed between ISLAM and the non-ISLAMIC world, since the 630’s AD.
    http://www.jihadwatch.org/islam-101.html
    The reason [from the perspective of NK, is] that the war with South Korea did not end, is because North Korea was never militarily defeated.
    [i.e. We could expect that North Korea will maintain the ‘conflict’ with SK, as long as the North Korean regime survives.]
    Likewise the war that has existed between ISLAM and the non-ISLAMIC world since the 630’s AD, will not end unless [logically] the non-ISLAMIC world chooses to confront and destroy the philosophy called ISLAM, because doctrinally, ISLAM will not, does not, *cannot*, allow any permanent peace with any ‘unbeliever’.
    [From the world-view perspective of good moslems, all ‘unbelievers’ must either,
    (a) convert to ISLAM,
    (b) live in submission [be enslaved] under ISLAM, or,
    (c) be killed for resisting the authority of ISLAM, over their lives.]
    Also, the two terms (a) ‘Peace’, and, (b) ‘submission to Allah’, are used interchangeably, by all good moslems, in all of their ‘conversation’ with non-moslems.
    When moslems ‘offer peace’ to non-moslems, they are ‘inviting’ non-moslems to become moslems.
    …and NOT, …offering non-moslems peace!
    This, ‘invitation’ to non-moslems embrace ISLAM, is set out clearly here, in the following Hadith;
    “When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them … If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya [‘submission’ tax]. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them”
    http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/muslim/019.smt.html#019.4294
    [Did you notice the logical error in this Hadith verse??? “…invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these….If they (3rd) refuse to pay the tax,” ]
    “O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him).”
    Koran 9.123
    Doctrinally, ISLAM permits a truce [and never peace] with ‘unbelievers’ – only whenever local moslem peoples/regimes are weak.
    If they have the capacity to undertake a hot war, all good moslems are religiously *obligated* to participate in hot wars [i.e. Jihad] against ‘unbelievers’.
    e.g.
    Live in peace till strong enough to wage jihad, says UK Deoband scholar to Muslims
    London, Sept.8 [2007]
    A Deobandi scholar believes Muslims should *preach* peace till they are strong enough to undertake a jihad, or a holy war.
    Justice Muhammad Taqi Usmani was quoted by the BBC as saying that Muslims should live peacefully in countries such as Britain, where they have the freedom to practise Islam, *only until* they gain enough power to engage in battle.

    With reference to that last item, please note that not only Pres. Obama, but previous US administrations, have regarded Pakistan as an ally of the USA, in its ‘the war on terror’.

    9 I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.

    Geoffery,
    Israel today and you do understand why God did not help them and instead sent the Romans against His own people Israel,don’t you ?
    The perverse,blind rebels still rebel against Him to this day.
    Nothing has changed with His people Israel since isaiah wrote this.
    “The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem, which he saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
    Listen, O heavens, and hear, O earth;
    For the LORD speaks,
    “Sons I have reared and brought up,
    But they have revolted against Me.
    “An ox knows its owner,
    And a donkey its master’s manger,
    But Israel does not know,
    My people do not understand.”
    Alas, sinful nation,
    People weighed down with iniquity,
    Offspring of evildoers,
    Sons who act corruptly!
    They have abandoned the LORD,
    They have despised the Holy One of Israel,
    They have turned away from Him.
    Where will you be stricken again,
    As you continue in your rebellion?
    The whole head is sick
    And the whole heart is faint.
    From the sole of the foot even to the head
    There is nothing sound in it,
    Only bruises, welts and raw wounds,
    Not pressed out or bandaged,
    Nor softened with oil.
    Your land is desolate,
    Your cities are burned with fire,
    Your fields–strangers are devouring them in your presence;
    It is desolation, as overthrown by strangers.
    The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard,
    Like a watchman’s hut in a cucumber field, like a besieged city.
    Unless the LORD of hosts
    Had left us a few survivors,
    We would be like Sodom,
    We would be like Gomorrah.”

    Would the South Koreans still consider the United States an ally:
    if the United States insisted that any South Korean response did not escalate the situation and demanded that any military response was out of the question;
    if the Unites States demanded that the South Korean Navy cease patrolling the northern limit areas;
    if the United States demanded negotiations with prior consessions be given to North Korea;
    if the United States supported North Korean territorial claims against South Korea and that part of Seoul be made into a North Korean capital;
    if the Unites States funded, trained, and equipped elements of the North Korean military with the full expectation that if negotiations failed within two years that those armed and trained soldiers would fight the South Koreans;
    if the United States threatened to passively support U.N. resolutions that were against South Korea unless South Korea submitted to U.S. interests directly against her own;
    if the United States intervened in and vigourously protested routine even bureaucratic processes of the South Korean government for the benefit of North Koreans;
    if any aid to South Korea was delayed and impounded and made contingent on concessions to North Korea;
    if the United States encouraged China and Russia in not only in supporting North Korea’s intransigence but coordinated with them in pressuring South Korea;
    if the United States touted Kim Jong Il as a true peacemaker and humanitarian;
    and if the South Korean Prime Minister was insulted in the worst possible way while visiting the White House?
    I don’t think so.
    The United States is an enemy of Israel.
    (and you shitty Americans don’t tell me that you’re not, what you think doesn’t matter).

    Kim Jong-Il oppresses his people and is as evil as Mugabe and the Muslim terrorists. NK is a dictatorship that is despised by all those who don’t get hooked up by the government. If the US had a president with balls, we could wax NK, but unfortunately we let them get nukes, so if we didn’t take out the nukes it could be a very bad situation. Not to mention the civilian casualties. These cowards are just like the Muslim terrorists in that they would hide behind their civilians and cry to the UN when they got their butts handed to them.

    ‘The United States is an enemy of Israel.’
    Steve ,
    Why do you work to steal the fantasy and delusions of the idol worshipers of Israel ?
    You disparge and impune their god.
    How dare you offend them with the truth.
    You should keep to fairy tales because that is what Israel loves to hear.
    They hate the truth and you are in danger of being stoned to death by the devoute heathen of Israel who go along with national suicide for lies of peace.
    Haven’t you learned anything from Bibi,Ehud 1 and 2, Shimon and the ruling gang of kneepad worshippers of America Babylon ?

    I can not explain to the world really how dismayed I have become because of the US debt crisis. I pray to be able to look our my chidren’s children face to face when I get older and feel reasonably ok regarding my crazy generation. It is a crying shame that the financial views have really gotten so very out of controlthroughout the last number of years. Is there a chance we will ever learn based on our bungle? People’s conception of cash and debt is really really unrealistic in the US. I really hope we learn from the past and never ever forget.
