It’s springtime for Jew-haters.

This week Oscar winning conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone joined Helen Thomas and Mel Gibson in the swelling ranks of out-of-the-closet celebrity Jew-haters. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Stone said that Adolf Hitler had been given a bum rap and that through “Jewish domination of the media,” the Jews have inflated the importance of the Holocaust and wrecked US foreign policy.

In the wake of criticism in Jewish circles, on Wednesday Stone’s publicist issued a mealymouthed clarification.

Stone failed to retract or amend his statement that “There’s a major lobby in the United States. They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f—ed up United States foreign policy for years.”

He also did not retract his view that Jews use the Holocaust to control American foreign policy.

Stone simply referred to his claim that Jews make too much of the Holocaust because the Germans killed more Russians than Jews as “clumsy.”

He then broadened his initial allegation that Jews make too much of the Holocaust by allowing that we are joined in our efforts by non-Jews.

And since non-Jews are involved also, he was wrong to criticize us.

As Stone put it, “The fact that the Holocaust is still a very important, vivid and current matter today is, in fact, a great credit to the very hard work of a broad coalition of people committed to the remembrance of this atrocity.” (Emphasis added.)

Stone still believes that the rounding up and exterminating of three-quarters of Europe’s Jews is really not as notable or morally troubling as high Russian wartime casualties, but it’s not solely Jews’ fault that people don’t share Stone’s views.

Arguably even more despicable than Stone’s display of Jew-hatred was the manner in which it was received. On the one hand, there was the thunderous silence of the media. And on the other hand there were the insistent, repeated attempts to justify his statements.

Readers’ talkbacks to write-ups of his remarks were rife with assertions that Stone’s statements were not bigoted. Many agreed that Jews dominate the media, and since they believe this is true, they argued that saying so is not a bigoted act.

Others claimed that while Stone’s statements were inaccurate, there is no evidence that he hates Jews and therefore, his statements weren’t bigoted. At any rate, Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times and many others have argued, it would be wrong for Stone to be discredited for his attacks against Jews.

It is difficult to imagine that if someone trafficked in ethnic stereotypes about groups like blacks, and claimed that they wreck US foreign policy to serve their own nefarious aims, Goldstein and the talk-backers would defend him.

But then anti-Jewish bigotry has different rules than other hatreds.

Stone and his defenders are not alone in either their attitude towards Jews or their denial of their attitude towards Jews. Indeed, they are part of a worldwide trend.

TAKE THE situation in Malmo, Sweden. Last Friday, Jew-haters set off firecrackers outside a synagogue in Malmo. The blasts came a day after Jew-haters posted a bomb threat on the wall of the synagogue for the second time in two weeks.

Malmo is a hotbed of anti-Jewish violence and the Jews of the city are fleeing in droves.

Yet in the face of all this, Malmo’s non-Jews cannot bring themselves to acknowledge that there is a problem with anti-Semitism in their city.

Even those who are supposed to be responsible for combating anti-Semitism refuse to acknowledge that Jews in Malmo are being attacked because they are Jews.

Bjorn Lagerback is the man in Malmo who is supposed to care about anti-Semitic violence.

Lagerback serves as the coordinator of the local forum in the city charged with combating hate crimes. In an interview with Malmo’s The Local cited by the World Jewish Congress, Lagerback tried to impress on the world that the bombing was serious. Not because it was violence aimed at Jews, of course.

No, according to Lagerback, this bombing is serious because it might hurt non-Jews. As he put it, “We condemn this completely. Such an event is not just directed against the synagogue, but also at other targets that could be described as ethnic or religious.”

Forget about the fact that only Malmo’s synagogues, and not its churches and mosques, require around the clock security. If no other ethnic or religious groups were targeted, would bombing synagogues no longer warrant condemnation?

The acceptance of anti-Semitism has reached epidemic proportions.

In Amsterdam, anti-Semites are making the mundane act of walking around outside in broad daylight a dangerous prospect for Jews.

Jews are regularly attacked verbally and physically by anti-Semites as they walk on the streets of the Dutch capital.

In an attempt to catch and punish anti-Semitic thugs, the Amsterdam police force has dispatched policemen dressed as Jews to pound the pavement. The hope is that these decoys will be able to draw out the offenders and arrest them.

Apparently, some Dutch have a problem with punishing anti-Semitic attackers. As Paul Belien reported in the online Brussels Journal, “Evelien van Roemburg, an Amsterdam counselor of the Green Left Party, says that using a decoy by the police amounts to [entrapment], which is itself a criminal offence under Dutch law.”

In other words, Van Roemburg thinks that people who walk around while appearing to be Jewish are asking for it.

Van Roemburg no doubt also believes that women in mini-skirts deserve to be raped.

ALL OF this brings us to a discussion of the most endemic form of contemporary anti-Semitism: Anti-Zionism. There is no reason for anyone to be surprised that anti-Semites deny that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. After all, they deny that every other form of anti-Semitism is anti-Semitism. Why should anti-Zionism receive special treatment? It is self-evident that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism.

Zionism after all is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people. To say that Jews – uniquely among all the nations – have no right to freedom and self-determination is obviously anti-Semitic.

Anti-Semites give a variety of excuses to justify their rejection of the Jewish people’s right to freedom and sovereignty in our homeland. Sometimes they say they have no problem with Jewish nationalism per se. They are simply anti-nationalist generally. But remarkably, these anti-nationalist anti-Zionists invariably just happen to be outspoken supporters of Palestinian nationalism.

Moreover, it is curious that universalist antinationalists only have a special term to describe their opposition to Jewish nationalism. No one ever mentions being anti-Irishist, for instance.

When someone says they oppose Irish nationalism, the obvious conclusion is that they don’t like Irish people. Just so, people who are anti-French tend not to like French people. And yet,
the anti- Zionists would have us believe that their opposition to the Jewish state has nothing to do with their feelings about Jews.

Beyond their nonsensical attempts to deny the fact that anti-Zionism is a specific rejection of a specific – that is Jewish – type of nationalism, there is the fact that anti-Zionists tend inevitably to drink from other anti-Jewish sewers as well.

Take former British parliamentarian Clare Short for example.

During her just ended career in the British Parliament, Short became known as an outspoken anti-Zionist. Short rejected Israel’s right to exist and castigated it for its “bloody, brutal and systematic annexation of land, destruction of homes and the deliberate creation of an apartheid system.”

But Short’s Israel kick didn’t end with her frequent condemnations of imaginary but lurid Israeli crimes. As time went by, Short began channeling centuries of British Jew-hatred. Like her forefathers who blamed Jews for rain, drought, plague and fire, Shore blamed Israel for global warming.

As she put it in a speech at the European Parliament three years ago, Israel “undermines the international community’s reaction to global warming.”

As Shore saw it, European leaders are properly obsessed with attacking the Jewish state. But because Israel insists on existing and so requires Europeans to condemn it, Israel prevents the Europeans from attending to the threat of carbon that, if left unregulated, will “end the human race.”

So if the world boils over, the cauldron will be made in Israel.

One of the most prominent anti-Zionists today is Prof. Juan Cole from the University of Michigan.

Part of being a successful anti-Zionist involves claiming that Jews have no right to the land of Israel. So to be a good anti-Zionist, one needs to deny Jewish history. To this end, in March Cole published a piece of historical fiction in the Salon online magazine. Titled “Ten reasons why East Jerusalem does not belong to Israel,” Cole mixed half truths with flagrant lies to justify his denial of Jewish history and belittlement of the Jewish rights.

Cole wrote, “Jerusalem not only was not being built by the likely then non-existent ‘Jewish people’ in 1000 BCE, but Jerusalem probably was not even inhabited at that point in history. Jerusalem appears to have been abandoned between 1000 BCE and 900 BCE, the traditional dates for the united kingdom under David and Solomon.”

This assertion is so mendacious that it takes your breath away. As anyone who has actually been in Jerusalem can attest, it is all but impossible to be physically present in the oldest areas of the city and not bump into relics dating from between 1000 and 900 BCE.

Cole’s allegation is the academic equivalent of Louis Farakhan’s claim that white people are devils planted on earth by aliens. As an anti-Zionist anti-Semite, it was just a matter of time until Cole traveled into the fetid swamp of denying the historical record to facilitate his false claim that Jews are not a people and therefore are bereft of rights as a nation to our national homeland.

And why shouldn’t he cover himself in anti- Semitic muck? So far, the stench has brought him great success. The very fact that I felt compelled to write an essay explaining why anti- Semitism is anti-Semitism and why anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism is depressing proof that anti- Semites have been wildly successful in whitewashing their bigotry.

What makes contemporary anti-Semitism unique is its purveyors’ great efforts to hide its very existence. Their motivation is clear. Outside the openly genocidal anti-Semitic Muslim world, most anti-Semites are self-described liberals who claim to oppose bigotry. For these people, pretending away their prejudice is the key to their continued claim to enlightenment.

And so the likes of Oliver Stone publish clarifications.

And Cole invents history. And the Europeans blame Jews and Israel and Zionism when Jews inside and outside Israel are assaulted and killed.

And I am sorry I wrote this column.

Because an audience that demands an explanation of why evil is evil is an audience that has already sided with evil.

Marlon Brando also said perhaps about 10 years ago or so (on an interview with Larry King I believe) that the Jews dominated Hollywood. That was also anti-Semitic but was completely passed over by the media so this phenomenon is not new. Neither is the phenomenon of the Jews of Hollywood (who do have influence) utterly refusing to promote Jewish values, stick up for other Jews, and staying silent in the face of anti-Semitism. They are more concerned in retaining their asssimilationist American and Liberal credentials.
Frankly I prefer the blatent anti-Semitism of Smell Gibson and Oliver Stonehead to the more subtle anti-Semitism of bleeding all over the floor for the suffering of the Arabs that Liberals do whenever Israel is discussed (of course ignoring the murder of Jews anytime and anywhere).
Haskala has always been a goddamned lie.

    Dear Caroline,
I remain a liberal Jew, living in America, who feels a deep revulsion to the comments of Oliver Stone and any other anti-Semitism belched out by purveyors of hate. I receive my share of criticism for challenging some of the actions of the Netanyahu government and some of your own support and disagreement with it. There are liberals and conservatives in Israel, Europe and here in America who go beyond the pale in attacking an other whether home grown or residing in the heart of Israel. I would like to think that with all the challenges that Israel faces today, first among them the threat from Iran, that it is incumbent upon opinion makers from the left and right alike to seek and find common ground that will build all those who believe deeply in the future of the State of Israel together in her support.

“The Jews run this town!” she snarled. That was ten years ago from a woman I’d known for over 30 years. I was stunned. I had never personally known or even heard anyone display such contempt for a group, any group. When I asked who she would like to see “run this town” she sputtered and was unable to answer. They forgot to tell her what group she wasn’t supposed to hate and she’d long since lost any concept of the individual.
I related that story this summer to another woman who responded, “Well, was she talking about Jews or Israel? I mean, even I’m starting to hate Israel.” She mentioned something about the flotilla. I asked if she was referring to the guerilla flotilla. I saw a dim light shine in her eyes as it registered that someone would suggest the fault may not actually be Israel’s. I don’t think she avails herself of the wealth of ideas beyond those proffered by MSNBC.
I grew up with both of these women. They are far left collectivists. They’re both tuned in to the loud Progressive narrative and shut down rapidly when alternative ideas seep through. They are lost to independent, rational thought and have been for years. One of them is a teacher who proudly proclaims she’d be happy to be the official book-burner in the coming Progressive Utopia. Until those happy days, she’s content to provide her students with her special brand of discipline wherein she specifically picks two innocent students to punish if a third student has broken a rule. The rule breaker’s punishment is to feel bad for those he caused to be punished. The other woman thinks the United States Constitution is immoral. If you give individuals liberty, after all, there’s bound to be trouble and government should be implemented to eradicate trouble. Additionally, the Constitution leaves out the part where the government is the distributor of any and all goods and services to those in need. She blanks out when I ask her how governments would acquire enough money to operate in place of an economy of free individuals.
I’m surrounded by people that think this way (West Coast, USA) and the few people I meet that share the views of the Right couldn’t argue their way out of a paper bag in defense of individual liberty, let alone the liberty of a nation acting in defense of its citizens. They too are collectivists.
Collectivism is evil. There is no liberty without individual liberty but I know (and know of) very few people who grasp this basic fact.

What makes contemporary anti-Semitism unique is it is intellectually dishonest. That explains why neo-libs can rationalize how there is a distinction between Anti-Zionism and Jew-hatred. The neo-liberal justification is that they have friends who are self-hating Jews, and are against Israel. Most of the so-called elite have the chutzpah to hate Israel because they are far removed from World War II and the Holocaust. Many times people need to be repeatedly reminded of history in order to learn the error of their ways. Finally Anti-Zionism and Jew-hatred go together.

I am somewhat liberal. I used to live in the S.F. Bay Area, graduated U.C. Berkeley, and for over 20 years saw and heard just what your talking about with my own eyes and ears from a broad section of the public (at school, work, the park, concerts, social gatherings), from both young and old. In my experience not only are these people ignorant, intellectually lazy bigots, deluding themselves into believing that they are indeed the world’s enlightened brain trust, but they have no problem saying these crazy things about Israel, Zionism and Jews right to your face, (that is, when they’re not doing that which takes up most of their time, namely, basking in self-congratulation and self-glorification for their “tolerance” and “insights”). Caroline, please keep it up!

I find it amazing that we have already forgotten the entire 20th century and its history of failed statist experiments. Of course the reason is the education that students (do not) receive these days. Even the Harvard-educated elite who seem to run (and sit in ultimate judgement) of the US today. I use Paul Johnson’s “Modern Times” as a refresher course, and David Horowitz’s “Radical Son” as semi-personal biography. And of course practically every post by Caroline…. These should be required reading in our schools. Amazing, and depressing eye-opening history. I am at a loss as to what to do. I feel like I am back in 1930s again.

It amazes me that no one I know can see the similarities of our time to the 1930’s, and that the world is heading toward another great catastrophe. People do seem to unconsciously sense the horrors to come but out of cowardice and a lack of self understanding scapegoat the Jewish people and Israel. Before WW1 Carl Jung had a dream that the wing of Satan cast a shadow over Jerusalem. This is an apt metaphor for our time.

If Oliver Stoner cannot distinguish between 3/4 of a people exterminated for no other reason than their religion then his is intelectually vacant. Yes many millions of others were exterminated, but not solely for their religion. Many of the Soviets and others that died did so through planned starvation by the Nazis which is hardly the same as death inflicted by gas chambers.
I am always amazed by the most liberal elemets of society who support some of the worst villians such as Castro, Mao, and Stalin who kill and imprison their own people.
Maybe Liberalism is simply about power and its exercise.

Caroline’s column is so breathtaking in scope, so true, and so depressing.
Only power is respected, right or wrong is irrelevant. It has always been thus, protestations to the contrary notwithstanding. Critical thinking is not a valued commodity and has always been relatively rare. It is up to Israel and the Jewish people who still identify with Israel to make their case if the ‘authorities’ are incapable of doing so.
The Muslims, hindered by a regressive, backwater culture still live a thousand years in the past and are unable to contribute much beyond hatred to modern society. Many Jews deny their backgrounds and rationalize their lack of commitment by professing belief in politicians and dubious Utopian schemes. What they are really saying is that they don’t want to upset their individual apple carts and would prefer somebody else do their fighting for them. And the politicians, the most cowardly of all, only go in the direction the wind is blowing. All are wrong. Ultimately I think Israel can only rely on Israel and the future for Israel and the World does not look promising.

Hi there my Dear Israeli friends! You all should pray (I do pray!) for SARAH PALIN to win in 2012. Otherwise not only Israel but also all FREE PEOPLE are in big trouble.
There is also hope that the conservaives (the true friends of Israel) will take back the Congress. This shall be the step in the right direction, but it is still not enough as Obama, even as a lame duck, will stall any reforms.
Marlon Brando, however his ignorance, was right about the Jews dominating the SOVIETWOOD. The tragic truth is that Spielberg, Katzenberg, Geffen are the worst enemies of Israel.
What about the other cretins like Dershowitz or Koch? I still remember how both have been sallivating themselves over Obama’s alleged pro-jewishness on the pages of The Jerusalem Post (which I visit frequently).
Today, Dershowitz is strangely silent and Koch is shedding his crocodile tears on the conservative site NEWSMAX. So is another ignoramus – Mort Zuckermann.
Similarily here in Australia. I happen to know quite a few local Australian Jews and sadly I seem to be much more concerned about Israel’s tragedy and her survival than them. I slao know uncomparably more about strategic picture surrounding Israel than them.
Who is then your true friend, the GOYS or the international Jewish Diaspora?
God Bless Israel, America and SARAH PALIN!
    And Poland as well…

    2. Art Buchwald was a respected political humorist. Wartime casualties? Actually, the 27 million dead on the Soviet side in WWII include millions of Russians, Belorussians, and Ukrainians who were rounded up and shot or hanged and entire villages were incinerated under the pretense of “combating partisan activity.” According to Russian estimates the Soviet Union suffered 11 million killed in action during the entire war. What happened to the other 16 million Soviet citizens? They are victims of Nazi mass-murder. Does this make Stone’s remark right? No. German murder squads were deliberately created to seek out and murder Jews for being Jews; generally the Nazi regime killed every Jew it could get its hands on. And although the number of Slav civilians exterminated by the Nazis on the German-Soviet front was staggering, many more were unharmed. Russians were allowed to fight for the Nazi regime under Russian tricolor banners; Hitler did not wage war on _Russians_ as such. Hitler and his henchmen did not have a clear, consistent policy on the long-term future of the subjugated Russian population following victory over the Soviet Union. On the other hand, anti-Jewish aggression was from the beginning the living purpose of the Nazi regime. The Russian experience of Nazi occupation (and Polish for that matter), terrible as it was, was not comparable with the Jewish experience.

Caroline, as always an excellent article, but extremely depressing. Saddest are the Jews who are self hating, almost embarrassed to admit they are Jewish. Juan Cole, as a student of mine who applied for a U of M job in Armenian studies reported to me, apparently told her during the interview that they would not hire anybody interested in researching and teaching the Armenian Genocide. It comes as no surprise to me that he falsifies the history of ancient Israel as well. But I fear that our worst enemies right now are anti-Israel Jews and the extreme religious establishment driving a rift within our people in the homeland itself. The great Soviet poet Charents was killed in 1937 for having written: “Armenian people, your only salvation is in your united strength.” We are small, but we have to remain a hard nut to crack.

Larry, imo, if we join what is precious with what is vile, we do not in that act, ‘improve’ that which is vile.
We merely corrupt that which is precious.
    e.g.
    I have two buckets.
The first bucket is full of clean, fresh water.
The second bucket is full of sewage.
    Q.
If i pour both buckets into a third container, what do i get?
    A.
A third container, full of diluted sewage.
    Conclusion?
While i could safely drink from the 1st bucket, i could *not* safely drink from the 2nd bucket, or the 3rd container.
So it is with evil, that is ‘tolerated’ by good people.
No matter how many times we repeat the phrase, “Tolerance is good.”,
…our tolerance of what is clearly evil, is not a virtue.
It is a process, a progression.
Whenever we choose to become tolerant of evil [in our midst], it is certain, as night follows day, that we ourselves, will become evil.
    i.e.
If we are tolerant of what is clearly evil, it is because we now ARE evil.
When we embrace the concept of ‘tolerance’, but what we are prepared to tolerate is clearly evil,
…we become those, who are evil, OURSELVES.
Our ‘tolerance’ of evil, is not tolerance.
    It is wickedness!

20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

We are back in the 1930’s where the world is boiling in Jew-hatred – pervasive, bloodthirsty, irrational and arational and genetic in nature – which is intended to reach crescendo with Israel’s destruction. The gauze-thin veneer of anti-Zionism now drops from their faces as the Jew-hatred in unabashedly naked. All the more reason for Israel to stand firmed, stay well-armed and clear-eyed about the enemies’ nature and agenda.
