Our iredeemable international system

Our international institutions are irredeemably corrupted. From the United Nations to the International Criminal Court and their affiliate and subordinate bodies, these institutions are rotten at their core.

It isn’t that they don’t function. They function just fine. The problem is that through their regular functioning, they advance goals antithetical to those they were established to achieve. Instead of promoting global security, human rights, freedom and international peace, they facilitate war and aggression, human suffering and tyranny.

The UN General Assembly is now convening its 64th session. As they do every year, heads of state from across the globe are descending on the Big Apple to participate in the proceedings. As they convene, their agenda will demonstrate the failings of the UN. On the one hand, they will consider the UN Human Rights Council’s latest broadside against Israel, which comes this week in the form of the UNHRC’s 575-page report of its probe of Israel’s behavior in its military campaign against the Hamas terror regime in Gaza this past December and January.

On the other hand, they will not give the slightest consideration to the fact that Iran is about to become a nuclear power, in contempt of its international obligations, and so is poised to become the gravest threat to international security in the past 25 years. Moreover, they will pay no attention to the fact that as it sprints toward the nuclear finishing line, the Iranian regime is engaged in a systematic and brutal repression of its political opponents, who since the stolen June 12 presidential election have been clamoring for freedom and democracy.

Both in its treatment of Israel and in its treatment of the Iranian regime, the UN demonstrates that its practices are an inversion of its stated mission. Despite its leaders’ and supporters’ repeated claims to the contrary, the UN stands shoulder to shoulder with tyrants and aggressors against democrats and democracies seeking to advance the causes of freedom, human rights and international security.

MANY ISRAELIS reacted angrily to the UNHRC’s probe of Israel’s prosecution of Operation Cast Lead, claiming that its final report presents Israel – a liberal democracy – as the moral equivalent of Hamas – an illegal terrorist organization dedicated to the commission of genocide against Israelis. Yet in their anger, they missed the real problem with the report.

As Prof. Avi Bell from Bar Ilan University law school notes, Richard Goldstone’s report does not present Israel and Hamas as moral equivalents. Rather, it presents Israel as a terrorist and Hamas as a legitimate government.

The Goldstone Report does not accept as fact that Hamas is a terrorist organization and that consequently, in accordance with binding UN Security Council resolutions, all UN member states are required to work to disband it and give no quarter to its members and supporters. Instead it treats Hamas – which is charter-bound to a policy of genocide against Jews and rose to power through a campaign of murder and intimidation – as the legitimate governing authority in Gaza, which, the report’s authors irrationally claim, is simultaneously governed by an Israeli occupation four years after Israel withdrew its civilians and military forces from the area. In the UNHRC’s parallel universe, Hamas is the only lawful actor in town. Israel – and the Palestinian Authority under Fatah – are guilty of illegally persecuting Hamas by arresting its members.

Hamas, which is working to establish a terrorist Islamic theocracy in Gaza, is not seen as systematically violating human rights and freedom. Israel is. Since it downplayed the 12,000 rockets, mortars and missiles that Hamas and its terror affiliates in Gaza have shelled southern Israel with during the eight years preceding Operation Cast Lead, the Goldstone Commission was unable to understand the overwhelming popularity the operation enjoyed among the Israeli public. Consequently, their report attributed that public support to Israel’s abrogation of the civil liberties of the operation’s opponents.

In contrast, the Goldstone Report downplays the importance of Hamas’s systematic persecution of women, Christians and its political opponents.

And so it goes. For 575 pages, rather than promote the cause of human rights as one would expect from the UN’s Human Rights Council, the Goldstone Report promotes a fiction of Israeli criminality and Hamas victimization. That is, it promotes the cause of human rights abusers against human rights defenders.

Many Israelis have expressed disgust with Goldstone, a South African Jew who purports to “love Israel.”

This is a reasonable reaction, for Goldstone indeed disgraced himself by leading this commission. But the fact is that the report would have drawn the same conclusions based on the same lies regardless of who led the commission. By its very nature, the UNHRC is incapable of doing anything else. Like the UN itself, it is a body dominated by dictatorships and supported by leftist elites who love them. Its political agenda, of supporting dictatorships on the one hand and attacking Israel on the other, is indistinguishable from that of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

THEN THERE is Iran. Before he flies to New York for his annual visit, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad intends to finish off his political opponents back home.

Friday is Jerusalem Day in Iran. Jerusalem Day is the day the regime organizes mass demonstrations throughout the country calling for Israel’s destruction. The regime’s democratic opponents, who since the stolen June 12 election have been doggedly maintaining their protests against Ahmadinejad, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the police state they run, are planning to use the day to stage renewed protests. Aware of their intention, Khamenei warned that anyone demonstrating for anything other than Israel’s destruction will be severely punished. Reports abound of the regime’s plan to use the day to arrest opposition leaders Mir Hossain Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, who both ran against Ahmadinejad in June.

Friday would be a good day to arrest them. After all, now that the US has agreed to hold negotiations with Ahmadinejad’s representatives next month about whatever Iran would like to discuss, the Americans have lost any residual leverage they still held over Iran. Today it is Ahmadinejad, not the US or the UN Security Council, who sets the agendas and conditions for meetings. And Ahmadinejad can be certain that in light of this, no one will utter a peep if on the eve of his trip to America, he arrests or even murders his chief political opponents.

In the weeks following the election, before the regime began its crackdown and arrested, killed, tortured and raped thousands of its opponents, many of the demonstrators held signs demanding to know where the UN was. Why, they wished to know, was no one at the UN supporting them in their demands for democracy and human rights? Why was there no international community standing at their side as they sought to bring down the most dangerous regime on earth – a regime that has made genocide a strategic goal and is steadily working to acquire the means to commit genocide through nuclear war even as it murders its own people?

And that’s the thing of it. The same UN that appoints a new commission to criminalize Israel seemingly on a weekly basis, has been a major facilitator of Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

First, for three years, from 2003 until 2005, the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency ignored mountains of evidence that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons and refused to refer the issue to the Security Council. Then, after the IAEA finally referred the issue to it, the Security Council failed to pass anything but the mildest of sanctions against Iran. Worse than doing nothing to prevent Teheran from acquiring nuclear weapons, these Security Council sanctions actually facilitated the Iranian program. W
hile passing ineffective sanctions, the council gave the appearance of addressing the issue and so made it impossible for individual states to convince other states to adopt harsher, and perhaps more effective measures – like for instance cutting off trade with Iran or divesting from companies that trade with Iran – outside the Security Council.

DUE TO the UN’s unvarnished belligerence toward it, in recent years a consensus has formed in Israel that there is nothing to be gained from cooperating with this openly and dangerously hostile body. Reflecting this consensus, Israel’s leaders, from former prime minister Ehud Olmert to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to President Shimon Peres, are united in their condemnation of the Goldstone Report.

For a time during president George W. Bush’s first term in office, the US also recognized that the UN and the UN-based international system is irredeemably corrupt. Bush and his senior advisers spoke of the need to build international coalitions of willing governments to advance the causes of international security, human rights and freedom that the UN and its affiliated bodies are inherently incapable of advancing. Although this policy received public support at home, it provoked fierce opposition among the US foreign policy elites in Washington and in the media and among their allies on the political Left.

Due to their criticism, by his second term in office, Bush agreed to give the UN a leading role in dictating US foreign policy. He subordinated American policy to the Security Council on the issue of Iran’s nuclear weapons program and cooperated with the UN as it advanced its openly anti-Israel agenda, even increasing US funding of such anti-Israel groups as UNRWA.

Bush’s eventual surrender to the establishment set the course for what under President Barack Obama has become a cornerstone of US foreign policy. Unlike Bush, Obama has enthusiastically embraced the notion that the UN should by rights have a leading role in international affairs. He has also accepted the UN’s basic notion that in the interest of world peace, the US and its democratic allies should bow to the desires of despots and dictators.

So it is that this week he abandoned US allies Poland and the Czech Republic in his bid to appease Russia. So it is that his administration has sided with ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, who, with the support of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, sought to undermine Honduran democracy, against Honduras’s lawful government and democratic defenders. So it is that the administration has sided with the genocidal mullahs in Teheran over their democratic opponents. So it is that the administration has adopted the view that Israel is to blame for the absence of peace in the Middle East and embraced as legitimate political actors Palestinian terror groups that refuse to accept Israel’s right to exist.

Until Obama came along, Israel could afford not to make too much of the fact that its enemies control the UN-led system of international institutions, because it could trust that the US would use its Security Council veto to prevent these forces from causing it any real harm. This is no longer the case. With the Obama administration fully on board the UN agenda, Israel and other threatened democracies like Honduras, Poland, the Czech Republic, South Korea and Japan will have to loudly proclaim the UN-based international system’s inherent moral, political and legal corruption and seek ways to undermine and weaken its power.

Its time for Israel to leave the UN. It would both be the principled and the moral thing to do. Consorting with dictators, tyrants and terrorists reduces Israel’s stature and reinforces all that is negative about the UN. Continued UN membership sends Jews the message that the world body, despite the fact virtually every nation in it hates Jews and wants see Israel destroyed, is of no moral consequence and Israel finds its deeds legitimate. The world body is not deserving of respect. Just the opposite. Israel resigning from the UN would be Israel’s Second Declaration Of Independence. It would declare the end of Israel’s cooperation with an a corrupt, arrogant and perverted organization that lives to persecute Israel. It would strengthen people concerned about justice, freedom and human rights. And it would discredit those who promote injustice, tyranny and genocide under the cover of UN principles.
It is time for Israel to act. L’Shana Tova!

For too long Israle has placed her faith in the international gangsters to do the right and moral thing.
Finally at this late hour Israel awakens to the reality that they are everything but moral and good.
The time for change in Israel has arrived ,a change from following lies and darkness to following the light of truth.
    On the UN Gaza war report ;
What if Israel had defeated Hamas instead of listening to crafty George and his secretary Condi Rice and there was no Hamas for them to come to the aid of ?
Small Jewish politicians did not have this vision because they were too busy on their knees licking the dust off the feet of their masters in Washington.
For too long Israel has chased after the U.S. for peace the same US which invented the UN where it proudly stands in New York City.
The US would have stopped funding the UN if it was opposed to it.
Naive Israel is only now beginning to see that the US is the UN AND THE UN is the US.
The small politicians of Israel without vision have been slow to awaken to the grave danger of their misplaced faith even after decades of non delivery of the promised peace.
They have prayed and brayed and genuflected to every failed plan since Oslo and keep faithfully on the same map to disaster because they refuse to return to the Holy One of Israel.
Israel continues to stubbornly stay on this failed course ,her cherished idol America and it’s bastard child the U.N expose Israel’s foolishness in trusting them instead of trusting in the Holy One of Israel.
You’ve been following and obeying the wrong God and what we now see is the end result of your misplaced faith. You thought it would pay off for Israel to follow them instead of God. How wrong you ahve been is now proven beyond a doubt.
The blame starts with the faithless politician’s of Jerusalem (and those who elected them) who could not find it in themselves to say no even once to the false god they willingly serve with all of their heart and mind.

With America fully and finally given over to the policies of freedom’s enemies, the slide into a global nightmare looks like being fairly swift. Reality cannot be broken, only distorted for a while – and with consequences. The result of the policies now being unleashed, mainly from or with the blessing of the US, would seem to be a future of possibly unimaginable horror.
The US funds the UN. If someone consistently pays for something one has to ultimately believe there is something about it that they like. Why does the US, year after year and decade after decade pay for an institution that seems to be dedicated to its destruction and the destruction of everything it stands for? Perhaps one needs to look at the people involved rather than thinking in terms of countries. What are they up to? It is so easy to control recipients of largesse and with a little bit of effective pressure policy directions could be changed so one has to suspect that there is some form of ‘coincidence of interests’ that for some reason is not on display.
Ultimately these guys (US State department, UN, etc) must know the implications of what they do and promote so it becomes fairly obvious that their intention for the world, starting with Israel, is unbelievably awful. Perhaps they seek to bring about a homogenised world state (in the interests of world peace!) no matter how many bodies it costs.
For Israel, though, the future seems to be simple. Either you go with the plans as presented by the US and most of the rest of the world and watch yourself destroyed, or you resist, try and do something about it. To object to being murdered!
But that resistance has been severely undermined by the global mass media to the point where a substantial section of Israel’s population seems to believe that to resist destruction is somehow wrong.
The psychological war against Israel is truly profound (the report of that ‘great Zionist’ Richard Goldstone being a case in point) and it seems to me that the people of Israel need to get to grips with the reality of how good and worth preserving their country is. How much the world needs you.
I just hope Israel can muster the resolve not to be pushed around and to be able to discern common sense in amongst all the lies and deceptions.

Although the UN’s goals are to prevent World War III and promote cooperation, it has been a dysfunctional organization. Instead of preventing the next war, the UN has become a bloated bureaucracy and primarily dominated by member nations, who have forgotten the lessons of World War II. Both the international community and the UN are in denial about Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. Without military intervention, a Muslim theocracy will have the means to threaten our way of life and freedom. And Israel is the one nation that understands the situation.

    Great article, Caroline.
As always I admire your depth of insight and your moral strength and courage whilst feeling anger and frustration at the insanities of the modern world you write about.
It is so unjust. What a moral inversion is taking place. For the UN what is false is true, what is wrong is right and what is bad is good.
Surely, only the G-d of Israel is the only hope of Israel.

Now this insanity from the BO’s cronies…
Brezinski Calls for Obama to Shoot Down Israeli Jets; “A Liberty in Reverse”
In a little noticed interview with the Daily Beast (presumably little noticed because serious people don’t read the Daily Beast), Zbigniew Brzezinski suggests that Barack Obama do more than just refuse to support an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear sites — the American president must give the order to shoot down Israeli aircraft as they cross Iraqi airspace:
DB: How aggressive can Obama be in insisting to the Israelis that a military strike might be in America’s worst interest?
Brzezinski: We are not exactly impotent little babies. They have to fly over our airspace in Iraq. Are we just going to sit there and watch?
DB: What if they fly over anyway?
Brzezinski: Well, we have to be serious about denying them that right. That means a denial where you aren’t just saying it. If they fly over, you go up and confront them. They have the choice of turning back or not. No one wishes for this but it could be a Liberty in reverse.
Contrary to Brezinski’s half-hearted disclaimer that no one wishes for such an outcome, there are plenty on the left who would delight in a pitched battle between the United States and Israel. Democrats in Congress routinely support resolutions affirming Israel’s right to take whatever steps it deems necessary to assure its own national defense. And Obama has at least paid lip service to the concept. But hostility to Israel among the rank and file is very real on the left — and among “realists.”
So conjure the image — the Obama administration sending U.S. aircraft up to protect Iran’s airspace and it’s nuclear installations from an attack by a democracy that is one of America’s closest allies. Unfortunately, this may not be so hard to imagine in Israel, where the number of people who believe Obama is pro-Israel is at just 4 percent — and falling. And given Obama’s (literally) submissive posture to the Saudis, his indulgence of the Iranians, and his simultaneously hard-line approach to Israel, it seems even some of Obama’s supporters can savor the possibility of a “reverse Liberty.”

Then you shall know that I am the Lord GOD. “Because, indeed, because they have seduced My people, saying, ‘Peace!’ when there is no peace—and one builds a wall, and they plaster it with untempered mortar— say to those who plaster it with untempered mortar, that it will fall. There will be flooding rain, and you, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall tear it down. Surely, when the wall has fallen, will it not be said to you, ‘Where is the mortar with which you plastered it?’” Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will cause a stormy wind to break forth in My fury; and there shall be a flooding rain in My anger, and great hailstones in fury to consume it. So I will break down the wall you have plastered with untempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be uncovered; it will fall, and you shall be consumed in the midst of it. Then you shall know that I am the LORD. “Thus will I accomplish My wrath on the wall and on those who have plastered it with untempered mortar; and I will say to you, ‘The wall is no more, nor those who plastered it, that is, the prophets (politicians)of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her when there is no peace,’” says the Lord GOD.

The Israelis who risk everything to make peace with those who seek to destroy them are much like the Americans who do so, though even crazier, given the immediacy of the threat to Israel.

    Caroline you got it right.
First of all the UN is a worthless body full of corruption that should be dismantled.
Until that can be accomplished the U.S. should request the UN to move their headquarters to another country, maybe they can alternate between Russia and Iran.
Why pay attention to the UN, no matter what Israel does, they turn it into a negative. Why hang around with those who do not respect you.
I mentioned the Goldstone Report on Israpundit and stated this is not about Goldstone, it’s about the report.
Think for one minute, the information gathered is from terrorist and residence of Gaza. You have to understand terrorist have no problem or conscience firing rockets into Israel targeting residential districts and schools, I assure you lying they can do standing on their heads. With respects to other than terrorist lying, it’s a matter of life or death and lying means protecting you life from the terrorist.
I am sure you will all agree the IDF doesn’t have a reputation for the mistreatment of the enemy, it’s not their MO.
There is no credibility with the report and it’s not worth the paper it’s written on but, then again if it’s about condemning Israel the UN along with the Jew haters will believe what they want.
Time has come for Israel to take a stand and pull out of this corrupt body.
The Obama administration shows their true colors by agreeing to meet with the Iranian leadership who in fact stole the election and the government.
You can bet the farm the Iranian gangsters will come away from the meeting making a fool of the Obama administration.

The United Nations is the ultimate expression of multi-culturism. Where else would Libya, Syria, Iran and North Korea be considered on equal footing with the United States, Israel and the rest of the West. The U.N. was morally compromised and thus fatally flawed from its inception by the inclusion of the Soviet Union as a charter member. Ayn Rand commented on the devastating effect this organization has had on the West:
“Psychologically, the U.N. has contributed a great deal to the gray swamp of demoralization—of cynicism, bitterness, hopelessness, fear and nameless guilt—which is swallowing the Western world. But the communist world has gained a moral sanction, a stamp of civilized respectability from the Western world—it has gained the West’s assistance in deceiving its victims—it has gained the status and prestige of an equal partner, thus establishing the notion that the difference between human rights and mass slaughter is merely a difference of political opinion.”
    And
“Who, but a concrete-bound epistemological savage, could have expected any other results from such an “experiment in collaboration”? What would you expect from a crime-fighting committee whose board of directors included the leading gangsters of the community?”
“The Anatomy of Compromise,” Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, 148
    http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/united_nations.html
Substitute Islamists/Arab/leftist dictatorships into the quote above and nothing has changed. The reason nothing essentially has changed in the U.N. is the mistaken notion that it is possible to compromise with evil. In compromising or making deals with evil the good only looses and evil only gains. Left to its own devices evil is impotent. For evil to triumph it requires the good to sacrifice its principals, its interests, its freedoms and eventually its life. The U.N. facilitates this triumph of evil, as Rand noted, by conferring a stamp of respectability to any mob of depraved gangsters that have murdered their way to the top of a member nation.
Obviously such a morally compromised institution cannot be reformed. It can only be dissolved.

Marcel, a profoundly important aspect of God is mercy. Sure there is no room for hypocrisy. If you believe in the Lord Jesus, His most severe rejection was of hypocrisy, and I think that is fairly much all that He roundly condemned. So while I agree with a lot of your analyses of what is going on, and, indeed, saying peace where there is no peace and other deceptions is consumately bad, my feeling is that people need leading to the truth rather than being shouted at.
Sometimes we have to speak with a loud voice, sure. But it gets me down, for instance, when people just tell someone that they smell. I insist they identify why the person smells and what that person can do to stop smelling and show them how to go about it.
All too often the person will not listen, sure. But usually the facts will speak loudly enough for themselves. And without introductions.
Why has America turned its back on God? Has it been led away? Or are people just so stupid they cannot think about God except in bite size chunks and think that is the whole deal? And therefore open to deception.
I agree with you that the answers lie in God’s word.
There is willful disobedience, but why, what is the cause, that people will turn away from love, truth, beauty and life.
I have, indeed, also wondered why on earth people could have murdered their children through fire to pagan gods (Molech). The human race does some stupid, horrifying, unnecessary and evil things.
Why can people willfully do something so awful?
Somehow they have missed the truth of God’s profound, all-sustaining love.
What is going wrong, now, with the world is deception and folly and greed from the top. The ordinary folk need help because they are nearly swallowed up and they don’t understand what is eating them.

Well, that is the Islamist view of the Jewish State. Jews are lesser humans, and as such they may not rule, they may not defende themselves, especially against muslims. rather, they should seek Muslim benevolence, at the price of eternal Dhimmitude and the payment of Jyzia. By failing to pay Jyzia and by failure to accept dhimmitude Israel has rightfully bought itsled all this misery.
Goldstone is one of two things. Either he is a Dhimmi, serving his Muslim overlord. Or he is a capo, inflictinmg the punishement meted by the Nazi. This here being Islamo-Nazi times, Goldstone is both, hoping to save his skin at the expense of his brethren.

Interesting comments on the God of Israel and the God of the US. Indeed they are one and the same and the only true God as there is none other, the difference being, Christianity’s acceptance of Christ as the Son of God. The sad story with America as has been rightly pointed out, is that the majority of Americans are not true Christians, but mock God by their very lifestyles even though knowing the truth. This nation condones much evil, including but not limited to homosexuality, pornography, abortion and all forms of rampant promiscuity. God indeed would have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah if He did judge America for its sins.
As a believer, I tend to believe that America as a whole got what she deserved when Obama got elected, even though myself and many others worked hard to attempt to prevent this from happening. To say the man is a type of curse is not an exaggeration, for he certainly does not stand for the principles of the Founding Fathers, the Constitution, Judeo-Christian values, or anything else that one could consider a semblance of being American.
In the interim between now and his exit from power, he must be confronted at every turn and stopped whenever possible.
Madam Caroline, I continue to marvel at your candor and incite. You are indeed a warrior for the cause of Israel, and she should be very proud of you. Well done.
