Kadima’s strategy for success

Provoked by the Palestinians' escalating missile campaign, on Sunday evening the Ashkelon Parents Association voted not to send their children to school on Monday.

Ever since the outgoing Kadima government ended Operation Cast Lead in Gaza on January 20, the Palestinians have steadily stepped-up their missile war against Israel. Over the weekend the IDF acknowledged that six weeks later, daily Palestinian missile barrages against Israel have returned to pre-Operation Cast Lead levels. Moreover, the IDF warned that over the past six weeks, Hamas and its sister terror groups have rebuilt their missile arsenals both through imports of Iranian arms from Egypt and through local production lines. They have also brought in fairly advanced anti-aircraft missiles capable of shooting down IAF helicopters.

The proximate cause for the decision to close down schools was the weekend missile strike against a high school in Ashkelon. The direct hit caused massive damage both to the school and to surrounding apartments. IDF inspectors assessed that the Grad missile the Palestinians used in the attack had been locally upgraded. Its warhead was two and a half times bigger than usual.

As Ashkelon's children settled into their living rooms instead of their classrooms on Monday morning, a few hundred kilometers to the south representatives from 80 countries and international organizations convened in Sharm el-Sheikh to pledge billions of dollars in aid to Hamas-controlled Gaza. The US, represented by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, pledged $900 million in assistance.

Also on Monday, The Jerusalem Post reported that the US is curtailing its military aid to Israel. Under new Pentagon guidelines, the Ministry of Defense must give a detailed accounting of how it uses every item it purchases with US aid money. As a consequence, the Defense Ministry issued new instructions to the IDF that from now Israel's purchases from the US will be limited to defensive armaments and systems aimed at preserving its "qualitative edge" against its enemies.

TO UNDERSTAND HOW it came to pass that six weeks after Operation Cast Lead, the US has joined the nations of the world in funding Hamas and is curtailing its military assistance to Israel, it is necessary to understand Israel's domestic politics. Specifically, since as Israel's leaders during Operation Cast Lead Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni are responsible for Israel's current predicament, it is necessary to understand their Kadima party's operating rationale.

The main rule of politics that has guided Kadima since its founding in November 2005 is never be perceived as failing. For the past three years, with the active collusion of the local media, Kadima has managed to control the flow of information to the public and so successfully covered up the abject failures of its strategic policies. Its success in last month's elections is testament to its extraordinary capacity to spin and obfuscate information.

THIS KADIMA PRACTICE was first implemented in the lead-up to the 2006 elections. At the time, the media worked with Kadima to suppress information about the strategic significance of Hamas's electoral victory in the January 2006 Palestinian Authority elections. They also blocked reportage and public discussion of the massive build-up of Iranian-supplied arms in Gaza following Israel's withdrawal from the area in September 2005, and the transformation of Gaza's disparate terror cells into Hizbullah-trained and styled paramilitary brigades.

The need for the cover-up was obvious: An open discussion of post-withdrawal developments in Gaza would have demonstrated to the public that Kadima's signature policy of unconditionally surrendering land to the Palestinians was, to put it mildly, insane.

Both the Palestinian cross-border operation in June 2006 that led to the kidnapping of Cpl. Gilad Schalit to Gaza, and Hizbullah's similar raid in July 2006 that fomented the summer war in Lebanon demonstrated the dire consequences of Israeli land giveaways. Neither the onslaught from Gaza nor the war from Lebanon would have happened if Israel hadn't left Gaza in 2005 and Lebanon in 2000.

For Kadima it was clear that to survive the events of the summer of 2006, it needed to develop a story line to hide the truth. In Lebanon, hiding the truth meant choosing defeat over victory.

For anyone with even a vague notion about strategy, it was clear at the time that the only way to protect northern Israel from Hizbullah was to deny Hizbullah the use of southern Lebanon as a base of operations. To do that, Israel needed to conquer and maintain control over southern Lebanon. Nothing else could end the Iranian proxy's ability to rain its missiles down on Israel. And given the jihadist nature and foreign command of Hizbullah, Israel has no capacity to deter the paramilitary force.

For Kadima's leaders however, a reconquest of south Lebanon would involve recognizing that their land surrender strategy was wrong. Their governing rationale would be discredited.

So instead they opted for defeat. Rather than fight Hizbullah to victory, they attacked their domestic political opponents by claiming that only warmongers would support a reconquest of south Lebanon. In so doing, they discredited the only viable strategy for victory while sending IDF forces to Lebanon to fight battles whose sole purpose was to run down the clock until the US stepped in and negotiated a truce with the terror army.

The US-mediated ceasefire, which legitimized Hizbullah as a political force and paved the way for its rearmament and takeover of the Lebanese government, was a disaster for Israel. But for Kadima it was a great success. Livni spun the ceasefire as a massive diplomatic accomplishment for herself and Kadima. The willing media went along with the fiction.

Although all the spinning in the world couldn't convince the public to support Kadima's planned unilateral withdrawal from Judea and Samaria, Kadima was able to salvage the gist of its defeatist strategy. By pretending that Israel hadn't failed in Lebanon, and defending the view that victory isn't an option, Kadima deftly replaced its unilateral surrender strategy with as strategy of surrendering land in the framework of a "peace process" with the pro-terror, corrupt, unpopular, and anti-Israel Fatah-led PA in Ramallah. That "peace process" in turn kept the land surrender policy on the table by asserting that the main obstacle to peace is Israel's unwillingness to give its land to the Palestinians.

A SIMILAR PATTERN unfolded with Kadima's handling of Operation Cast Lead. Here too it was clear to any semi-sentient observer that the only way to defend southern Israel is to reconquer Gaza. For as long as Hamas controls territory it will use it to fight Israel. And given Hamas's subservience to Iran, its jihadist ideology and its Syrian-based leadership's distance from the front, it is obvious that Israel has no capacity to deter Hamas.

But for Kadima, which owes its existence to its leaders' execution of Israel's 2005 pullout from Gaza, acknowledging that Israel has no option other than reasserting control over Gaza was not an option. Then too, a reconquest of Gaza would discredit Kadima's new-old signature issue of giving away Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.

And so, rather than fight to win, Kadima again fought for US intervention. Livni and Olmert claimed again that only warmongering extremists supported reconquering Gaza, and announced that Israel's goal was to deter Hamas. For its part, the media blocked all discussion of whether or not it is possible for Israel to deter Hamas and cooperated in demonizing anyone with the temerity to note that the only way to secure southern Israel is to control Gaza.

Then, as elections approached, Kadima declared that deterrence had been achieved and pulled IDF forces from Gaza.
They told us that the continued Palestinian missile offensive against the south was nothing more than the last gasps of a defeated foe. And the media went along with them.

In the lead-up to the elections, the international diplomatic backlash against Israel was underplayed and the strategic meaning of Hamas's continued missile war was widely ignored by both Kadima and the media.

NOW, AS THE LIKUD-LED rightist bloc is forming the next government, information about Israel's actual situation is finally being reported. Not only did Israel not deter Hamas, the inconclusive end of the campaign has paved the way for a massive diplomatic onslaught against Israel and a diplomatic campaign to legitimize Hamas.

Today Israel is being blamed for Hamas's war against it.

Kadima's favorite Palestinian "peace" partners in Fatah are leading an international campaign to indict IDF commanders as war criminals.

While last weekend's bombing of yet another Israeli school was met with international indifference, international leaders lined up to have their photographs taken outside the UNRWA school in Gaza that the IDF attacked in January after Hamas combatants used the building as a missile launching pad against Israeli civilians.

Then there is the US-backed international campaign to force Israel to surrender control over its borders with Gaza to Hamas. Last week Clinton joined her European counterparts in demanding that Israel permit cement, aluminum tubes and other missile components to enter Gaza in order to alleviate the "humanitarian suffering" of the poor Gazans. Furthermore, like Europe, the Obama administration supports the establishment of a Hamas-Fatah government.

IN THE MEANTIME, Kadima pretends that there is nothing to worry about. As The Jerusalem Post reported on Friday, both Livni and Olmert refuse to actively oppose the international campaign to criminalize IDF commanders because doing so would involve criticizing Fatah leaders with whom they claim to have such wonderful ties. Similarly, the Obama administration cannot be criticized because that would mean that Kadima has failed to maintain US support for Israel.

And that's the point. With its policy of never acknowledging failure, Kadima's strategy for dealing with the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead has been on the one hand to ignore what has happened, and on the other hand, to blame Likud for what is transpiring.

Rather than attack Hamas and Fatah in international forums and so defend Ashkelon's schoolchildren at least diplomatically, Livni devotes herself to attacking Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu for refusing to back Palestinian statehood.

Netanyahu's view is clear. Surrendering control over Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem to the Palestinians will endanger Israel. For as long as that remains the case, it is impossible to support Palestinian statehood.

Likud's position is indisputable. But it is also a denunciation of Kadima's governing strategy. So Livni denies the truth to advance her party's interests and condemns Likud for recognizing reality.

In so doing, she has paved the way for an international boycott of the Likud-led government. The Palestinians and their allies throughout the world are already arguing that there is no difference between Likud and Hamas since both of them reject the so-called "two-state solution." Clinton is expected to demand that Netanyahu publically endorse Palestinian statehood during her visit here.

As we absorb the spectacle of world leaders lining up to give their money to Gaza while Israeli schoolchildren are forced to stay home from school, we must understand how we got here. We are here because Kadima has placed its political success above Israel's security.

Things don’t look good Caroline. In fact they look pretty dire. I think we should remember that,as with football, there is a game clock running in the background. Israel doesn’t have all the time in the world to act.
Who knows how soon the Iranians will have the bomb? How much more time is left for Israel to take effective military action in Gaza? With better weapons being provided to Hamas and the US establishing restrictions probably not very much.
This situation you have described pretty much tells us that Israel is being backed into a corner. Will Israel fight for its life or will it follow orders and climb into the boxcars for one last ride to the death camps?
If Israel is destroyed it will not trouble the western powers. To them it will be just another Cambodia or Rwanda. Something to tut tut about and generate a few documentaries but nothing more. The only thing that can save Israel is Israel (with G-d’s help).
Once again I call upon the Lord to curse America and Europe for enabling this great evil to happen. May they get ten fold what they are trying to do to Israel.
    Stay safe – stay iron

Incoming Prime Minister Netanyahu needs to form his government without neo-liberals. A two-state solution is not plausible, and Kadima won’t compromise on that issue. Israel needs a nationalist coalition that will place country above politics. Mr. Netanyahu can eloquently defend Israel’s interests, and doesn’t need Kadima’s help to govern. Unfortunately, the US and EU mistakenly believe that Gaza should be rebuilt with Hamas in control. The only way to stop the rocket attacks on Israel is for Gaza to be re-conquered. And Israel needs to restore a credible strategic deterrent.

There’s the revolting spectacle of Israel’s politicians falling all over themselves to allow aid to Gaza while giving the safety of Israel’s children short shrift. Jews must take a back seat to the Israeli elite’s need to look good before an indifferent world. Which is how Kadima wants to be seen.

An excellent anaylysis of the failure of Kadima’s policies as regards the security of Israel.
Only Israelis can safeguard the future of Israel, and they need to do so politely in diplomatic circles, with force when required, and never never giving land for peace, for that way lies the destruction of Israel. Peace can be achieved when both parties give peace in exchange for peace. When that is a reality, gthen land can be traded one way and another, but not before, i.e., gifts of land should be as a gift and reward for a genuine peace treaty, and not just another hudna.

Its hard for me to understand how we have gotten to this point.
What reason did the media in the past and now in the present have to team up with kadia so well?
The big failure about operation cast led was the fact that to achieve what they did could have been easly done in the first 10 days. we had soldiers sitting doing nothing for another 10 days just for the government to decide that it prefers to just temporarily stop the hamas and not overpower it in a way they can’t shoot more rockets. This all proves that the only reason to go into the operation was for political gain, Kadima for the elections and Olmert for his failure in 2006. One of the reasons Kadima succeeded so well in the elections is that people didn’t want to look back at there performance for the last 3 years they just looked at what was going on the month before the elections. We also keep forgetting how our government works and people keep thinking that they voted for a primeinister and not a leading party so they didn’t understand that Kadima under Livni’s rule is the same Kadima that Olmert ruled.
Everyone keeps talking about how they are thinking about whats best for israel’s future but none seem to do so and how can the Likud do so when the media and Kadima are confusing the public and making the new government seem like a failure before it has even been formed?

Netanyahu shows a small flicker of resistance to the globalist agenda and this worries the Cabal…… or is this just another scam foisted on those who do not look to God for Israel’s help ?
Hillary and her boss are not happy that Israel might not go along with their final solution and now the intimidation and threats will increase behind closed doors.
It’s no wonder Bobo has spent so much time courting the loser Livni.
That was his orders from Washington.
Sadly there is no leader in Israel with real faith to stand up against this great evil from a treacherous betrayer camoflauged as a friend.
Netanyahu is damaged goods,a CFR shill who has proven he bends for his foreign masters.
What is sad about all this is that Netanyahu had a golden opportunity to end Israel’s death march when he was Prime Minister but chose instead to get on his hands and knees and lick the feet of Bubba Clinton instead of presiding over a state furneral for the no peace process.
Since the evil one President Peres has tasked Netanyahu to form a government he has wasted his time courting the losers of Kadima and Labor to join him while he sticks it to the right.
If those like Barak,Peres,Livni and Olmert were held accountable for their traitorious actions and behind bars I would have more hope and confidence for Israel.
Likud, the mother of the bastard child Kadima is incompetent and impotent because no one in Likud has the stones to tell the U.S. to go to hell as well as Egypt and the rest of the frauduelent peace gang.
Israel is going to suffer greatly for playing the loyal prostitute to her many U.S. pimps over the years.
There is no turning back the payment for this folly of historic proportions.
May God keep His faithful ones safe when His judgment fall’s on the whore’s of Israel for no peace who ignored Him and got on their knees to serve their false, lying, degenerant idols in Washington ,the EU and UN.

Caroline another great article exposing the ills created by the outgoing Kadima government.
Hamas is back in action, more so now than before and yet there is no denouncement coming from anyone. Operation Cast lead failed the Israelis, due to being halted before the mission could be completed.
Tonight Clinton arrives in Israel and she has to be told up front Israel is not taking orders from Washington. Israel determines what is best for Israel.
Israel is not looking for anything different then what would be offered to any other friend and democracy under NATO.
Besides, Israel is the only Nation in the ME the US can count on to provide stability to the area. The US cannot afford to loose Israel, a trusted friend and it’s high time the US treats Israel as one. Reducing military aid is not a smart move. Old saying “don’t cut off your nose to spite your face”.
Israeli land is not for US to give. In fact, Israel may find it necessary to take back Gaza and So. Lebanon. Moves necessary for survival.
The Palestinian statehood in Israel is off the table, it is not in the best interest of Israel or the Palestinians.
And if the US finds it necessary to spend $900 million in aid to Gaza, they better walk the fund through otherwise Hamas has many hands.

    Dear Caroline Glick!
I have read your column in JP every week since OP Cast Lead. I have realy enjoy it. You are very clear, realistic and honest in your analysis. You say exactly what i think. Your opinion on Iran, Hizbulla, Hamas,PLO, current US-administration and its Obama-Clinton foreign policy and the new anti-Israeli/anti-Semitism cours in the entire Europe and last but not least Kadima and Livni, is simply very true.
I am Kurd (from Iran) and live in Sweden. I am ashamed when i read at Swedish papers that tens of thousends prepare to attend in an anti-Israeli demostration against Isreli tennisplayers at a Davis Cup match in a few days time. It is an upsidedown world we live.
Whit the new devastating US/Obama Mead East policy, Isrel is the only remaining barrier against Jihaddism/Islamism in the hole Middle East if not in the World. I really don´t know what happens if Israel are not able to cope whit it. After all Israel is a small contry whit %20 hostile Arab population. Europe has completely surrenderd to political Islam. US A la Obama/Clinton/Mitchel/Gates are on the way to do the same. Look at France, GB, Germany and… they all want that Israel pay the price to satisfy their own Islamic population and prevent future Jihaddism conflicts. Suicidebomber, rockets and missiles are more or less accepted and tolerated by West (and nowdays US too) if Israel is the taget, just it does not happen there in their own contries.
I honestly believe that there is just one power, one contry and one people which has ever been able to understand the evil of combination Arabism/Islamism/Jihaddism, and that is namely State of Israel and Israelis. And it is because of this truth, i believe it is an obligation and a duty for every indinidual who wants to live in a World whitout suicidebombers, Jihaddists and Islamist terrorists, a democratic World whit tolerance and coexistence,
humanity, dignity and rull of law, to support The State of Israel and Israelis and their sruggle for the right to existence.
In the current circumstances it appears The State of Israel is the only power that can restrain an Islamic dominance in the Mead East.
But it needs help. We must support the State of Israel and its democratic aims. I do it whitout reservation.
    Caroline! Stay firm, stay safe

Caroline Glick’s latest column, “Kadima’s strategy for success”, is an eye-opener and jaw dropper.
First jaw dropper: “Over the weekend the IDF acknowledged that six weeks later, daily Palestinian missile barrages against Israel have returned to pre-Operation Cast Lead levels.”
What!? Nothing at all in the main stream media. Why is the main stream media so biased, that their bias now forces them to disavow the truth happening right in front of their faces?
Second eye opener: “Hamas and its sister terror groups have rebuilt their missile arsenals both through imports of Iranian arms from Egypt and through local production lines”
And yes, I am aware of the new larger payload Grad rocket being used. Well, I have to admit that humanity is the same no matter which race, when it comes to killing, you simply have to have the best killing machine. There seems to be no end to this mortifying goal.
So another question has to be asked the uneducated main stream media. “Do you think that Hamas or Palestinians would stop lobbing missiles into Israel when Israel became non-provocative?”
We all know that everyone on the face of the planet is rushing aid to the Gazans, it seems that we cannot give enough aid fast enough to do this, so clearly Gazans should have a little gratefulness, a little thankfulness, right? So why the lobbing of missiles?
Unfortunately these types of questions seem to be far above the ability of the main stream to answer, much less understand.
Next jaw dropper Glick delivers and it might get her in trouble: Its [Kadima] success in last month’s elections is testament to its extraordinary capacity to spin and obfuscate information.
Caroline clearly is speaking the truth on this issue. But now I am upset with all governments for being so damned dishonest that they won’t speak any truth at all to their own citizens.
Is it the purpose of government to control its citizens, like a parasite on its host? I thought government was to protect its citizens, not exploit them. But hey, I have to admit, America (aka the Obama administration and Congressional democrats) is now taking exploitation levels to a new high, lunar levels. What do you expect from a nation that landed man on the moon? We’re going to show the rest of the world how to really exploit people as we spend trillions of tax dollars!
I have read the rest of the column with a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach, mostly because I am realizing that Israel has the same AIDS infection in government that the US has. Somehow government people lose control and their lust for power and control takes over and they become immoral. Such people have lost the ability to govern, sad to say, but true.
But I cannot help feeling that the US has trasmitted this fatal disease into the Israel government.
Finally, for the one comment who wishes 10 fold curses upon America and the West, I concur, but as an American I just wish that I would not have this punishment fall upon me. I am praying (and trying to do what I can) for Israel’s success. Please do not wish me ill.
Finally, I commend Caroline for her courage. Let’s see if we can get more people aware of those missiles being lobbed into Israel… the new improved missiles, that is.
Thanks, Caroline, for a provoking column.

What a great editorial, Caroline. Spot on and spells it out like it is. Pops in Vienna is correct. It is sickening to watch Europistan and my country, The USA rush to fund continued terroist attacks against Israel and it’s citizens through this wasted aid to gazastan and it’s islamofacists. I am truly disturbed and DEEPLY troubled since January 20th, 2009 when the liar and poser BHO, and his corrupt, anti semtic adminsitration came into power. The fools in America that voted for this bum’s lies of hope and change are now wondering, many in shock at what BHO has ruined in such a short time. Israel will once again, have to stand on her own or vanish. I pray and hope to G-D that Bibi and the Israeli people are up to the task. It is really troubling to watch the EU and USA keep feeding the hand of islamofacism when they truly want Israel, the Jews destroyed and an Islamic caliphate ruling the entire world. When will we learn there is NO peace in Islam nor can there EVER be peace with Islam.

Caroline,I saw the picture of SOS Clinton in Israel today with her large smile.
This and a few choice lies is all it takes to make the Jew’s headed for slaughter feel at ease.
By peace many in Israel will be destroyed.
These are not my words but the words of a great Jewish prophet who lived in the heart of old Babylon.
Today Israel ,bows to and serves the new Babylon.
    TROJAN PEACE HORSE
And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Hillary has a killer smile !
She is in Israel today selling her master Satan’s destruction of Israel plan.
It shall not succeed, but the whore of Israel for peace will suffer for bending their knees to her instead of God.
How easily the average Israeli is deceived by anyone who inserts the word peace (with a grin or smile) into a recipie for Israel’s destruction
    The final push is on.
The globalist evil elites know that their moslem investors and business partners do not want peace with the infidel Jews.
The U.S. no longer hides it’s endgame of destroying Israel by it’s false peace Road Map as Hamas is now welcome into the process with much confusion and crafty deception.
Yes is no and no means yes with these smiling demon inspired politicians whose only agenda is not peace but deception.

Indeed it does. The entire ME policy of America and the EU rests on Israel acquiscing to land being taken away, with no real security in exchange. This is win-win for America and the EU, for neither have to give up anything in exchange for continued oil supplies.

Beware Israel….Clinton and Obama do not have your best interests in mind. Stand for yourselves….do not count on the US to aid or deliver you.

This world is full of mysteries.
One would have thought that in light of Iran’s great concern for the people of Palestine – which great concern, I’m so very sorry to say, does not include Israelis – the Islamic Republic would have been first in line to attend the conference in Sharm el-Sheik. One would have thought that out of a pure philanthropic sense of Islamic respect and mutual consideration for a fellow population of Muslims, as mandated by the Al Qu’ran, the Islamic Republic would have been at the forefront of the big donor countries pledging far, far more than Saudi Arabia and the United States, the Land of the Tax Free, combined. One would have thought that Tehran would have undertaken to give, chequebook in hand, billions and billions of Dollars for the reconstruction of Gaza, and for assisting all those poor, innocent Palestinian children now made orphans by all those mean Israeli soldiers. Even at the risk of being cynical, one would have argued that merely by surpassing Saudi Arabia in terms of donations, Iran would have captured the attention and conquered the sympathy of a great many Sunni Arabs, who constitute the foundation and backbone of the political strength of the House of Saud.
You can therefore imagine, Ms. Glick, my deep frustration and great disappointment at discovering that no such gestures of generosity have come neither from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad nor from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Fortunately, not all is lost. As reported by the IRIB News Agency, the Islamic Republic has now announced that it will stage its own international conference in support of the Palestinian people and their cause, to be held this coming Wednesday and Thursday in Tehran. This conference promises to be a model of Islamic enlightenment and democracy, as it will bring together men and women of all walks of life and of a great many professions … oops, let me rephrase that … as it will bring together men of all walks of life and of a great many professions from all four corners of the … well, from all four corners of Mesopotamia. Although it appears that no money is involved, nevertheless the conference boasts a great motto: “Human Disaster in Gaza and Violation of International Rights”, and will be characterized by a constellation of legal and juridical expert opinions and analyses proffered by the greatest luminaries available, such as lawyers from Iran, judges from Iran, journalists from Iran and experts on foreign and domestic matters, also from Iran. Not to mention, of course, religious people from Iran and politicians from Iran.
    Eat your heart out, Hillary!
Just by way of a short commentary to your post, with a little effort I found an article I read in the Jerusalem Post late last Summer. It can be viewed at :
    http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1218104239541&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FPrinter
The article, entitled “We’ll neutralize S-300 if they’re sold to Iran” and authored by Yaakov Katz, illustrates how an ‘electronic warfare’ device (EW) developed in Israel can neutralize the S-300 Russian anti-aircraft missile defense system, if this is sold to Iran. This article goes on to explain how, if the EW was developed in fact by Israel, not only the Iranian defense system would be neutralized: the entire Russian defense system would be compromised just as well.
This is but one example of what Israel can do to destabilize the balance of power in the Middle East without firing a single shot. If you recall from my last comment, I favor the theory of “diplomatic ambiguity” on the ground that the more the balance of power in the region is destabilized, the more the Obama Administration will be forced to come to more compromising terms with the government of Mr. Netanyahu. This is particularly true in light of the ever-deepening spiral of financial turmoil the socialist policies of this Administration have and will continue to generate, and the growing perception of weakness in various foreign policy issues on the part of the international community – and especially Europe, of all places.
Another example of how the incoming Likud government could strengthen its stance vis-à-vis the Administration, and thereby partially undo the failed policies of Kadima, is the fact that Mitchell is likely to open a permanent office in Jerusalem. Not only should the incoming government embrace such an idea: it should also expand it by enticing China and even Russia to open similar permanent offices in the capital. Nobody is more anxious than Russia to see the price of oil increase, other than perhaps Saudi Arabia, and nobody is more anxious than China to step into the Middle East theater as a political counterbalance to America’s hegemony in the region.
It would be therefore a lot more difficult for this Administration to dictate terms to Israel, if in fact alternatives were present and available right there and then, should the new government ever decide to retake Gaza. The same would be true of the other superpowers.
Permanent offices, of course, are permanent until such time as Jerusalem says they are permanent.
Besides, a Russian permanent office in Jerusalem would be preferable to a Russian Permanent office in Gaza, should this become sovereign. Not to mention an Iranian permanent office.
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Netanyahu would obviously prefer to lead a center-left government. His recent overtures to Kadima and Labor prove where his true sympathies lie.
With American and Israeli diplomacy on a collision course, it is becoming clear that Israel must stand alone. To stand alone Israel must be independent–that is, not dependent on the United States.
To Pops in Vienna: The justice of G-d is already destined for perfection. Therefore, suggesting targets for His wrath is quite unnecessary. As for the United States and Europe, the only thing better than enjoying their favor is not needing it.
I am optimistic that while peace may not prevail, Israel will.

Hopefully, a unity or Rightist government led by Netanyahu can turn around the situation. They cetainly have their work cut out for them. Why it isn’t accepted that Hamas and Fatah are terrorist organizations that shouldn’t be negotiated with by Western governments is beyond me. Organizations whose founding charters set the course for the destruction of a state founded by a comfortable vote in the UN assembly are by international law outlaw entities. So why do western governments allow the UN to continue to coddle the Palestinians? If anyone has a logical explanation, please enlighten me. Israel must act according to it’s security needs, vis-a-vis, Iran, Syria, Hezbullah and the Palestinian terrorist organizations and launch a massive legal and PR campaign to defend itself and to disseminate the reality of its security situation given the terrorist organizations confronting it. Giving even a small parking lot to the Palestinians shouldn’t be contemplated by even the Israeli Left.

RAMALLAH, West Bank – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday promised vigorous and personal involvement in stalled Mideast peace efforts and criticized Israel’s demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem as “unhelpful.”
Clinton also displayed strong public support for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinian Authority is the “only legitimate government of the Palestinian people,” she told a news conference, standing next to Abbas.
On Tuesday, Clinton met with Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu.
The hardline leader opposes the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel and supports the expansion of Israeli settlements on war-won land claimed by the Palestinians, including the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
In recent days, Israel has issued orders for the demolition of dozens of Palestinian homes in east Jerusalem, saying the homes were built illegally.
Palestinians say they cannot receive proper building permits from Israeli authorities, and the planned demolitions are means to assert Israel’s control over the disputed city.
“Clearly, this kind of activity is unhelpful,” Clinton said, adding that she would raise it with the Israeli government as well as municipal officials in Jerusalem. She said such actions violate the “road map,” a U.S.-backed peace plan.
Clinton spoke shortly after Israel issued a new order to demolish five residential buildings containing 55 apartments, said Hatem Abdul Qader, a Palestinian official on Jerusalem affairs.
“It’s an open demographic war,” he said. He said lawyers have challenged the orders, halting the demolitions until March 10.
Stephan Miller, a spokesman for city hall, said the buildings under demolition notice were empty and had been built illegally.
Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed the area. But the annexation is not internationally recognized, and the Palestinians seek east Jerusalem as capital of a future independent state.
Palestinian leaders are watching closely for signs of change in U.S. policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Palestinians were disappointed with the previous U.S. administration’s failure to take Israel to task for accelerated settlement construction in 2008, at a time when the two sides were holding U.S.-backed peace talks.
Settlement expansion makes it increasingly difficult to establish an independent Palestinian state.
Abbas said Israel cannot be considered a peace partner if it keeps expanding settlements and demolishes homes in east Jerusalem.
“The Israeli government has to respect its obligations under the road map and the two-state solution and completely stop all that is related to settlement and demolitions,” he said.
Abbas has steadily lost support at home, particularly after a year of inconclusive peace talks. His Islamic militant Hamas rivals, who seized Gaza from him in 2007, meanwhile are widely seen as emerging stronger from Israel’s recent military offensive against them.
Clinton signaled that she’d be heavily involved in the region, and said her special envoy, George Mitchell, would return soon.
“The Obama administration will be vigorously engaged in efforts to forge a lasting peace between Israel, Palestinians and all of the Arab neighbors. I will remain personally engaged,” she said.
“This is a commitment that I carry in my heart, not just in my portfolio.”
Her predecessor, Condoleezza Rice, was also a frequent visitor, but made no headway in solving the conflict.
Clinton suggested Wednesday she is not considering imposing solutions, saying it’s up to the two sides to reach an agreement. On Tuesday, she said that working toward the creation of a Palestinian state as part of a peace agreement with Israel “seems inescapable.”
Clinton said she intends to hold “very constructive talks with the new Netanyahu government.” Netanyahu is still trying to form a coalition, and seems headed for a right-wing government.
Abbas and Clinton, meanwhile, talked about Gaza’s future. After the Hamas takeover, Israel and Egypt closed the territory, a policy tacitly supported by the international community, which shuns Hamas as a terrorist group.
However, the blockade has come under renewed scrutiny following Israel’s three-week military offensive against Hamas, which ended in an informal cease-fire Jan. 18. Some 15,000 homes were destroyed or damaged in the war, meant to halt Palestinian rocket fire on southern Israel, and international aid officials say Gaza’s borders need to reopen to make reconstruction possible.
“We want humanitarian aid to get into Gaza in sufficient amounts to alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza,” Clinton said, but stopped short of calling for a full opening of the crossings.
Abbas called for an opening of Gaza’s borders to pave the way for reconstruction.
Currently, Israel allows several dozen truckloads of aid to get into Gaza every day, but bars the entry of concrete, pipes and other materials. Israel argues that such shipments could be seized by Hamas and used for building bunkers or rockets.
In Gaza, Hamas condemned Clinton’s comments. Spokesman Taher Nunu said her statement “was a slap in the face of those who were expecting changes in America foreign policy. She did not bring anything new. Instead, her statements show bias to the Zionist enemy.”

The Israeli Left will use all it’s media power in and out of Israel to derail the Netanyahu government and will only call off it’s dogs if Labor or Kadima join up with the Likud. The Israeli Foreign Ministry will quietly bemoan Netanyahu’s government and work to undermine it’s effectiveness. The top military leadership will constantly leak to the press that they will not be drawn into some useless venture just to shore up Netanyahu’s fading popularity. And the Attorney General and the Israel Police will cook up all sorts of investigations and false charges to paralyze the government and prevent any serious changes in policy. On the other hand, those same powers will give Netanyahu a free rein in handling the budget and the economy, even though they may occasionally cry alligator tears about how the government’s economic policies hurt the poor. In other words, the Left will behave in exactly the same manner that is always does when a diplomatically Nationalist and fiscally Conservative government is elected to office here. The Palestinians will moan and cry, our local media pundits will stress how difficult it is for the Americans to work with a “hardline right wing Israel government,” and as usual, due to Palestinian intransigence and violence, the Middle East Peace Process will stay stuck exactly where it is now. In other words, nothing has changed and we can expect the same things from the same people.
