Fatah’s message

A central pillar of the Obama administration’s Middle East policy paradigm was shattered at the Fatah conference in Bethlehem – but don’t expect the White House to notice.

At the conference, Fatah’s supposedly feuding old guard and young guard were united in their refusal to reach an accommodation with Israel. Both old and young endorsed the use of terrorism against Israel. Both embraced the Aksa Martyrs Brigades terror group as a full-fledged Fatah organization.

Both demanded that all Jews be expelled from Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem ahead of the establishment of a Jew-free Palestinian state.

Both claimed that any settlement with Israel be preceded by an Israeli withdrawal to the indefensible 1949 armistice lines and by Israel’s destruction as a Jewish state through its acceptance of millions of foreign-born, hostile Arabs as immigrants within its truncated borders.

Both demanded that all terrorists be released from Israeli prisons as a precondition for “peace” talks with Israel.

Both accused Israel of murdering Yasser Arafat.

Both approved building a strategic alliance with Iran.

In staking out these extremist positions, both Fatah’s old guard and its younger generation of leaders demonstrated that Fatah’s goal today is the same as it has been since the its founding in 1959: Liberating Palestine (from the river to the sea) by wiping Israel off the map.

Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas’s decision to remove both his own mask and that of his organization should cause the Netanyahu government to reassess its current policies toward the group. For the past four months, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his government have quietly barred all Jewish construction in eastern, northern and southern Jerusalem neighborhoods, as well as in Judea and Samaria. The government’s unofficial policy has been implemented in the hopes of pleasing the Obama administration, which argues that by barring Jewish building, Israel will encourage the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority to moderate its policies and so engender an atmosphere conducive to a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian conflict with Israel. The Fatah conference put paid to that fiction.

Fatah’s message to the Netanyahu government is important. But even more important is the message it conveys to the Obama administration. For Netanyahu, the Fatah gathering bore out his prior assessment that the group is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. For US President Barack Obama, the message of the Fatah conclave was that his administration’s assumptions not only about Fatah, but about terrorists and terror-supporting regimes in general are completely wrong.

FOR THE Obama administration, Fatah was supposed to be the poster child for moderate terrorists. Fatah was supposed to be the prototype of the noble terrorist organization that really just wants respect. It was supposed to be the group that proved the central contention of the Obama White House’s strategy for dealing with terror, namely, that all terrorists want is to be appeased.

But over the past week in Bethlehem, Fatah’s leaders said they will not be appeased. To the international community whose billions of dollars in aid money and boundless goodwill and political support they have pocketed over the past decade and a half they sent a clear message. They remain an implacable terror group devoted to the physical annihilation of Israel.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration is already making clear that it is incapable of accepting this basic truth. As Abbas and his cronies were exposing their true nature in Bethlehem, Obama’s counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, was giving a speech in Washington where he demonstrated the administration’s ideological inflexibility.

Speaking before the Center for Strategic and International Studies last Thursday, Brennan declared that appeasing terrorists and terror-supporting regimes and societies by bowing to their political demands is the central plank of the administration’s counterterror strategy. As he put it, “Even as we condemn and oppose the illegitimate tactics used by terrorists, we need to acknowledge and address the legitimate needs and grievances of ordinary people those terrorists claim to represent.”

To this end, Brennan stressed that for the Obama administration, the now-discredited Fatah model of conferring political legitimacy and funding on terrorists in a bid to transform them into good citizens must be implemented for every terror group in the world except al-Qaida. In furtherance of this goal, the US government will no longer refer to America’s fight against terror as a “war on terror” and it will no longer refer to the enemy it fights as “jihadists” or the cause for which these “violent extremists” fight a “jihad.”

As Brennan explained it, referring to terrorists as terrorists is unacceptable because doing so sets the US against terror-supporting regimes that the Obama administration believes are all amenable to appeasement. And referring to Islamic terrorists as jihadists gives the jihadists the “right” to define what jihad is. Since the Obama administration perceives itself as a greater authority on Islamic law and tradition than the likes of Osama bin Laden, Ayman Zawahiri, Ayatollah Khomeini, Khaled Mashaal and their fellow jihadists worldwide, Brennan unhesitatingly asserted that “‘Jihad’… means to purify oneself or to wage a holy struggle for a moral goal.”

Building on the false Fatah model of appeasable terrorists, Brennan indicated that the Obama administration believes that Hizbullah is well on its way to becoming a respectable political actor. As he sees it, simply by participating in Lebanon’s political process, the Iranian proxy has earned the right to be viewed as a legitimate political force. Brennan cited the fact that in addition to active terrorist elements, Hizbullah members today include “members of parliament, in the cabinet; [and] there are lawyers, doctors, others who are part of the Hizbullah organization” as a reason to celebrate the group. He further claimed that Hizbullah members who are not actively involved in terrorism “are in fact renouncing that type of terrorism and violence and are trying to participate in the political process in a very legitimate fashion.”

As The Jerusalem Post‘s Barry Rubin argued on his Web site, The Rubin Report, Brennan’s assessment of Hizbullah is not merely factually wrong. It also exposes a deep misunderstanding of why Hizbullah entered the Lebanese political fray – and why Hamas entered the Palestinian political fray – in the first place. Brennan’s analysis is factually wrong because at no point has any Hizbullah member ever condemned or in any way criticized its paramilitary or terror cadres. To the contrary, Hizbullah’s nonmilitary personnel have gone on record repeatedly praising their terror brethren and have expressed disappointment that they are not among the movement’s fighters.

Like Hamas – which Brennan in the past has expressed support for recognizing – Hizbullah entered Lebanese politics with the intention of taking over the country. It wishes to control Lebanon both to protect its military forces, and to advance its jihadist aim of spreading the Iranian revolution and destroying Israel. Like Hamas, Hizbullah’s political empowerment has not moderated it. It has strengthened its military arm and made it politically impossible for its domestic rivals to oppose its war against Israel, its ties to Iran and Syria and its independent military force.

Unfortunately, as Brennan made clear last Thursday, the Obama administration is intellectually wed to the notion that terrorists like Hassan Nasrallah, and terror-supporting regimes like Bashar Assad’s Syria and his overlords in Iran just want to be accepted by the West. They cannot accept any evidence to the contrary.

THIS WEEK the Obama administration dispatched senior military officials to Damascus for yet another round of friendly talks with the Iranian
satellite. According to media citations of Pentagon and State Department officials, the administration is looking to cut a deal where in exchange for Syrian agreement to curtail its support for jihadists in Iraq, the US will put pressure on Israel to surrender the Golan Heights to Syria.

As for Iran, the administration has officially given the mullahs until next month to decide whether they are interested in negotiating a deal with the US regarding their nuclear program. Although Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her colleagues in the administration are beginning to acknowledge that Iran will not meet their deadline, the administration has no Plan B.

The White House continues to oppose placing additional sanctions on Iran. State Department officials said this week that they fear that additional sanctions – including widely supported Congressional bills that would limit refined petroleum imports to Iran – would cause the Iranian public to rally around the regime. The fact that the Iranian public is in large part now begging Western countries to reject the legitimacy of the regime has made no impact on the Obama administration. Indeed, top US officials are unanimous in their willingness to accept Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the legitimate president of Iran. Appeasement remains the only option the administration is willing to consider.

The Obama administration’s unswerving efforts to accommodate terrorists and terror-supporting regimes wherever they are to be found demonstrates that for the administration, appeasement is not a tactic for achieving US policy aims. Appeasing terrorists and regimes that support them is the aim of US policy.

All of this makes clear that in spite of its reasonable desire to reach a deal with the Obama White House, the Netanyahu government must abandon any plans to do so. The Post reported this week that the government is now negotiating a six-month extension of its unofficial ban on Jewish construction in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria with US officials. These negotiations must be ended immediately.

Indeed, the proper response to the Fatah conference is for the government to announce that it is approving all building requests it has held up for the past four months. It should also declare that from now on it will treat all requests for building permits in Judea and Samaria and Jerusalem in the same manner that it treats such requests from everywhere else in the country.

The Obama administration’s devotion to appeasement shows that even if it wished to reward Israel in some way for going along with a construction freeze, it has nothing to offer. The only play in its game book is further concessions to terrorists and regimes that sponsor them. A settlement freeze will lead to a demand to accept a Lebanese “unity” government where Hizbullah reigns supreme, or a Palestinian “unity” government that paves the way for Hamas’s international legitimization. An Israeli willingness to discriminate against Jews in Jerusalem will lead to a further demand that Israel cede the Golan Heights to Damascus, and accept Iran as a nuclear power.

For the Obama administration there is but one way of looking at terrorists: Just as Fatah can be appeased, so the mullahs can be accommodated.

Fatah’s message that it will not be appeased is a message the Obama administration will never receive.

The Obama administration’s foreign policy is similar to the European design. President Obama and the EU are using amoral pragmatism as a method to engage Muslims. Unfortunately, it will take an avoidable war to discredit the liberal views of the West. Because the Americans and Europeans are appeasing Radical Islamists, an inevitable conflict between two civilizations is coming. After the IAF courageously destroys Iran’s nuclear sites, the West will continue to isolate Israel. Finally, as long as self-serving politicians continue to appease jihadists; they will place Western Civilization in jeopardy.

‘Unfortunately, the Obama administration is already making clear that it is incapable of accepting this basic truth’.
Caroline you and Barry still cling to your delusion’s. It is Israel which is incapable of acepting the truth.
Do you really think Obama is that stupid to not know what Fatah,Hamas and Hizbollah are as Bush before him ?
Israel is the only nation buying this because everyone else knows the agenda which is destroy Israel by the peace process.
Its amazing how much Israel put into this processs of their own destruction to get the world and their idol America to love and accept them.
Thats why Fatah’s open crusade against Israel confrence will change nothing.
Since Israel’s impotent leaders are too fearful and weak to end the farce and enjoy theIr subservient status of just following orders as Netanyahu and Olmert and Sharon before him we are guaranteed that the trains to the death camps within Israel will roll on time.
You can bet on it because Netanyahu is just following orders as he did when he permitted this gathering of Islamic terrorists in Bethlehem to please his oberfuherer Obama.
The fatal flaw with Israel’s absoutedly worthless secular leadership is they have no where else to turn to so they keep playing the same dog and pony show.
This is why secular Israel is incapable of accepting this basic truth that the peace process is not about peace but Israel’s destruction.
Otherwise how could a people become so utterly stupid to keep going on with the destruction of their own nation farce going on 16 years now ??????
The moslem crusader Palestinian’s do not even bother to hide their true agenda because they know the self loathing Jews who stand for nothing will continue down the path to their own destruction no matter what.
What a good little kapo Bibi has been under his recycled rule. As a fake rightist he’ll end up doing more damage than the left just like Sharon before him.

Appeasement works, what are you thinking? It works not for the Appeaser, Obamanation, but for the Appeasees: Hamas, Fatah, Hizzbolah, Iran and radical Islam (and all of Islam who yourn for Sharia, but shun Sangria.)
Obamanation and the rest don’t seem to get it, but afterall, there’s no word ‘Appeasee’ in at least my spellcheck, so how No wHere is that? Or is it Now Here?
All the money the gov’t give out for humanitarian stuff WILL be instantly converted into payments for WEAPONS, not tampons for the ladies. If it were a self-supporting area or country, then it would be easier to control, but then it would be a prosperous place, who do not starve the people TO GET SYMPATHY and money. This actually rewards the making of many ‘sacrifice’ and live ‘for the glory of Allah’ like thieves and beggars. ‘Just like the old days, aye Hussein?’
All I have to say, it must be very lucrative for the Appeaser’s Deputies who dole out the money to the Poor Terrorists and Terror Enablers ( i.e. Appeasees, aka Appeased). Do the Appeaser Deputies get the money upfront, before it goes to the terror people, or are the terror people so grateful that they want to ‘touch the cloth of their Obamanation Benefactor, whoever is the Deputy anointed by the One or gets lucky for each shipment? Is it the last, grand friendly PhotoOp after all the food aid (money separate) arrives in neighborhood after neighborhood to smiling, outreached hands of wrinkled people? Click, click, CNN, Aljeziera, FOXie.
Can’t wait for the show on NBC, a good time when, Leader to Leader, a large Diamond (I mean Golden Butterknife) passes to the Appeaser Leader 1, from the newly recognized Appeaser Leader 2, and 2 gets an iPod with ‘really good’ speeches for the masses on it (some never heard before). And the big joke they share: From 1: ‘Yea, they say, or rather we say, Justice is Blind; but I say well at least I know my speechwriter was blind, I mean that lovely gift of words from JFK thru Sweet Caroline. … Oh, no I didn’t really dump her; she was very happy with the cash, you know, that’s Blind Justice, right?
Remember, Appeasement only works for the Appeasee; well thanks to time (flow of energy, not the media with that named magazine). They both get to be Appeasees and most of those Nazi Taxpayers of America snicker like they pretend to know what an Appeasee is, and who cares they fork over the money, and then the media gets their mics out and put them in faces and asks ‘How can those too well dressed people accuse you of trying to appease the suffering in the MidEast, you are giving support to those poor children whose homes were ….?
‘Appeasee, Appeaser … let’s not mention that or give that any face, keep that word off my teleprompter….. you got that, Jew Rahm?’
Note: the preceding was not directly recorded, except by some possible psi entanglement communication…. go Google.
The criminal enterprise is from top to bottom, but the criminal enterprise within the transfer of weapons as to great dinners, etc. or much more …. is eliminated. See the saving?
See the equivalence? Like the Apple and the Horseturds, floating down the river, the Horseturd all too eager to celebrate their common glee in a ‘Alak a day, how we Apples swim.’
A little bit: The one are excesses going directly to a hostile enemy who has stated and continues to state and support killing of your taxpayers and allies. The other are excesses going to an agent of defensive weapons to a country who is threatened or who has supported us in most every cultural and social tolerance. (And oh by the way, it’s not that hard to frame someone for the willing press, talk to Dan Rather; I’d rather not.)
One really stinks; the other would benefit from keeping from customary dipping into other peoples’ money.
One threatens and wants World suffering, to give it up for Allah, hey you strap on a bomb … Chicken? … or Jew Monkey?; they say ‘no’; the other (possibility) threatens getting used by the former One.

Great article Caroline. Hope that every member of the U.S. Congress reads it!
Especially Congresswoman Nita Lowey who chairs the House Foreign Appropriations Committee.
Sometime back she put a hold on $150 million Rice wanted for Fatah, after Abbas’s statement that Fatah could not engage in armed conflict, “because we are unable…, but in the future stages things may be different.”
As it was, Lowey caved in and let loose with our tax money anyway.
Now however, since Fatah has publically gone on record as endorsing the Al-aqsa Martyrs Brigades as the military wing of Fatah, according to U.S. law it would be illegal to fund Fatah. The Al-aqsa Martyrs Brigades is a U.S. recognized foreign terrorist organization.

Brennan, another “expert” on Islamic terrorism. Our government is full of know-nothings like this fellow, particularly since Obama took over. However, it is good for Israel to understand how things are and act accordingly in its own interests.
The sooner Israel sends Mitchell packing back to Washington, the better, and as you recommend Caroline, Israel should stop all negotiation with the Obama administration on settlements. Obama basically is hostile to Israel- it is rooted deep in his psyche.
His Marxist roots are to bring down America, and to do that he needs to minimize exterior problems; hence appeasement is Obama’s center stage foreign policy, just as the Bolsheviks did in 1917 with Germany.
He seems to think Americans are stupid. He will be learning some lessons on this over the remainder of his time in office.

Thanks again, for the informative commentary. Your column stands out in a sea of what has become infotainment, sensationalism, and misinformation. We in America have “news” available 24 hours a day, and yet we glean little truth. Unfortunately, America has yet to understand the wages she is earning and will earn from the election of her current president.

Caroline it’s time we all recognize the Palestinians are not interested in living in peace with the Israelis and as you state, they want to wipe Israel off the map.
The Israeli government has to take a good hard look at what is best for all her people and move forward with the reclaiming of their rightful territory and stop listening to Washington.
We shouldn’t have to remind the Israeli officials Israel is a sovereign Jewish Nation and should be in complete control of her sovereignty without interference from any outside power.
We have a Muslim and anti-Semitic president and administration definitely not friendly to Israel and it won’t get better until this crew is out of office.
When the president visits just about every Muslim country and bows to the Saudi leaders you better not expect anything good from this guy. He can’t be trusted.
Remember recent polls indicate a majority of Americans do support Israel and I am sure they are not happy with Obama and his treatment of Israel.
In the meantime Israel has to concentrate on improving her military and defense policies.
Your recent article indicated and I agree the last two encounters with Hezbollah and Hamas the IDF’s did not do the job they were capable of doing.
The IDF’s should have driven Hezbollah out of Lebanon and put a licking on Syria while they were at it and they should have driven Hamas completely out of Gaza and reclaimed this territory.
    Forget about construction freeze.
Construction should continue in all of Israel from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean, including Samaria, Judea, Gaza, the Golan Heights and the Sinai.
Illegal Palestinian settlements should be removed. There are no doubt a majority of Palestinians who would prefer to live in and under control of the Israelis. Let’s say they prefer to live and enjoy the benefits of a prosperous democracy rather than be governed by radical terrorist. They should be allowed to remain while the others should take a trip to Egypt or Jordan.
Time to end talks with the Palestinians as it is not going anywhere.

There are many tell tale signs that the Road Map game is stacked for Israel to lose.
An example of this is the globalist controlled media from Europe to Australia to the U.S and their cover up of the moslem on moslem murder in Gaza on Friday the 14th of August.
If it sheds a bad light on Israel’s enemy it is buried .If it sheds a bad light on Israel it’s always front page.
In their ‘destroy Israel by peace’ agenda they always move the ball in favor of the Palestinian’s Hamas or Fatah or Syria or Hizbollah,Lebanon,UNIFIL,ect.
Israel is always the only team penalized and never the ISLAMIC Palestinian terrorist always portyayed as victims
This is why the news from Gaza was covered up.
Israel’s secular and wimpy leaders(NETANYAHU) go along with this evil agenda while faking out the Zionist camp.
Netanyahu could have put an end to all of this but he intentionally failed again.
He is not a leader but a PROVEN American bred fraud. A Manchurian at heart.
In the cursed land of Gaza a new and even more rabid Islamic group has arisen to war against Hamas because it is considered not foaming at the mouth radical enough.
The billions of dollars which the decadent and gulit ridden west has pumped into Gaza has ended up in the sewer.
Somehow the UN,EU,US and every NGO will find a way to blame Israel for this.
You can’t bless what is cursed no matter how much money you throw at it!
How is it possible that anyone cannot see the satanic roots of this religion of death which our politicians lie and tell us is a normal religion ?
When they can find no infidels to kill they turn on each other.
We’ve seen this happening for a long time in Iraq,Afghanistan,Pakistan,Algeria and everywhere else Islam has taken root.
Read the news at the above link and you will see that God’s curse on Islam is in effect.
    I will bless those who bless you, (Israel) And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Ultimately I feel these guys (US State department, etc) must know the implications of what they are doing so it becomes fairly obvious that their intention for the world, starting with Israel, is unbelievably awful. They are probably doing it in order to bring about the homogenised world state, no matter how many bodies it costs. I think perhaps they think in the order of billions these days not just millions.
However, for Israel, the short term is simple.Either you go with the plan as presented by the US and most of the rest of the world and watch yourself slowly destroyed, or you try and do something about it. I don’t think Israel has to really do anything dramatic but rather to simply hang in there and decline to give itself away – be obliterated.
But that resistance has been severely undermined by the global mass media to the point where a substantial section of Israel’s population seems to believe that to do anything effective to resist destruction is somehow wrong and/or immoral.
The psychological war against Israel is truly profound and it seems to me that the people of Israel need to get to grips with the reality of how good and worth preserving, in fact, the country is. How much the world needs you.
It would seem that the lights of individual freedom are being extinguished around the world. If that happens prosperity and well being will decay. The Soviet countries were but a fore taste, and we will all be losers.
I just hope Israel can muster the resolve not to be pushed around and to be able to discern common sense in amongst all the lies and deceptions.

Dear Caroline, I think you fundamentally miss-understand the American position. Who am I to disagree; I am the person who informed the US Congress about the downfall, by popular uprising of the government operating out of Moscow: 1986 ( figured it out by 1980); told congress Gorbachev would be running around selling his books: “for American dollars only”: 1989. Copyrighted “long lasting war” 1991 and delivered the message to every member of Congress (about the war we were in and the exact battle tactics that would be used against us), Google” long war” and see Bush/Blair tried to adopt the term to replace war on terror. Jan 1999: that terrorist would again hit the World Trade Center and I went to N.Y. to see that beautiful city before the terrorist hit it and refused to go south of 40th street. Et al.
I have the greatest appreciation for Caroline and her writings.
On this point: Caroline and the rest of you are like the spouse who has not figured out that not only is the “love” gone from the relationship, but hatred has replaced it. You mistake the money and weapons and relationship as coming from someone who in reality is figuring out how to kill the spouse rather than pay the divorcé; a divorce that could leave the cheating scoundrel exposed.
Yes there was near universal laughing at my conclusions stated in the first paragraph; but they were all correct.
Yes, the USA Bush/Obumer/Clinton/Bush ( James Baker) believe in the Saudi “piece” initiative: “peace by piece by piece”: I copyrighted that phrase/depiction and delivered it to Congress in 1989.
You are wrong Caroline, they get it; it is you that does not get it.
The USA literally brought the Ayatollahs back to Iran, and invaded Iraq for the same reason: maintain instability, keep that oil off the market and thereby maintain high prices for oil so the mideast countries could be sold high priced weapons and have “a nice long lasting war and sell lots of weapons”: Copyrighted 1991.
The President has no use for Israel or Jews; his self hating suicidal staff and “piece” now (peace now, but not tomorrow”: copyrighted and delivered to congress 1993 right after the handshake) excepted, that explains the US actions correctly.

Of course this is the usual PLO and Palestinian Authority which makes it perfectly clear that the Palestinians will never ever make peace or even a phony baloney settlement with Israel. Unfortunately, Israel continues to surprise the Palestinians by acceding to their demands without ever demanding anything in return. The Palestinians now have a terror state in Gaza which they were provided with courtesy of Ariel Sharon, former IDF General and Israeli Prime and Defence Minister. Not to be outdone, Ehud Barak, another former IDF General and Chief of Staff of the IDF, and former Prime and Defence Minister, actually offered to give up the Old City of Jerusalem and all of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza to the Palestinians. But of course, the biggest giveaway and creation of an existential danger to Israel was done with the Oslo Accords by so called Mr. Security himself, former IDF General, former IDF Chief of Staff, former Prime Minister, and former Defence Minister, the late and unlamented Yitzchak Rabin. With eminent Israeli Generals and security experts willing to surrender territory to the Palestinian terrorists whenever they are given the chance and even expel entire Jewish communities to boot, I can easily see why the Palestinians stand by their hard line demands and expect to win the war and destroy Israel without even having to fight, much less give something, anything, in return. And it is also now wonder that our allies are now confused, disillusioned, and disheartened by our inconsistent and dangerous behavior and have decided to support our enemies. Just like Osama bin Laden is purported to have said, when a person looks at two horses, one strong one and one weak one, he prefers the strong one. Well, Israel looks weak, acts weak, and talks weak while the Palestinians look strong, act strong, and talk tough and guess what, even America now prefers the Palestinians!
