obama-fail1.jpg

If safeguarding international security is the chief aim of US President Barack Obama’s foreign policy, then at some point he can be expected to change course in the Middle East. For today, Obama faces the wreckage of every aspect of his Middle East policies. And largely as a consequence of his policies, the region moves ever closer to war.

In Iraq, Obama’s pledge to withdraw all combat forces from the country by the summer has emboldened the various forces vying for control of the country to set it ablaze once more.
In Afghanistan, Obama’s surge and leave policy has left would-be US allies hedging their bets, at best. And it has caused the US’s NATO partners to question the purpose of their deployment in that country.

Then there is Iran. Last week’s report by The New York Times that this January Defense Secretary Robert Gates penned a memo to National Security Advisor James Jones warning that the Obama administration has no effective policy for dealing with Iran’s nuclear weapons program exposed the bitter truth that in the face of the most acute foreign policy problem they face, Obama and his crew are out to lunch.

Gates’s attempt to mitigate the story’s impact by claiming that actually, the White House is weighing all its option only made things worse. Even before the ink on his correction note was dry, his Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy was telling reporters in Singapore that the military option, “is not on the table in the near term.”

Iran for its part continues to escalate its menacing behavior. Last week its naval forces reportedly interdicted a French ship and an Italian ship navigating through the Straits of Hormuz.

President Shimon Peres’s announcement last week that Syria has transferred Scud missiles to Hizbullah in Lebanon was a sharp warning that Iran and its underlings are diligently preparing for war with Israel. It also demonstrated that the Obama administration’s attempts to use diplomacy to coddle Syria away from Iran have failed completely.

Administration officials’ statements in the wake of Peres’s bombshell make clear that Syria’s bellicose actions have not caused the US President to reconsider his failed policy. Obama’s advisors responded to the news by irrelevantly boasting that their policy of “engagement” enabled them to bring the matter up with their Syrian interlocutors three times before Peres’s announcement and once more after he made the statement.

And that’s not nearly the end of it. As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced last week, soon the Obama administration will expand its dialogue with Syria by returning the US ambassador to Damascus for the first time since Syrian President Bashar Assad ordered the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri five years ago. That is, Obama has chosen to respond to Syria’s open brinkmanship by rewarding Assad with newfound legitimacy and panache.

And that’s still not the worst of it. What is worst is that Obama’s advisers openly admit that they have no idea why Syria remains a rogue state despite their happy talk. As one administration official told Foreign Policy, understanding why Syria – Iran’s Arab client state – is acting like Iran’s Arab client state is, “the million dollar question.”

“We do not understand Syrian intentions. No one does, and until we get to that question we can never get to the root of the problem,” the official told the magazine.

But while they wait for the Oracle at Damascus to decode itself, they are content to continue wooing Assad as he provokes war.

Then there are the Palestinians. After rejecting Obama’s envoy George Mitchell’s latest plea to conduct indirect negotiations with Israel, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas explained that Obama’s own statements have convinced the Palestinians that there is nothing to negotiate about.

As he put it, “Since you, Mr. President, and you, the members of the American administration, believe in [the urgent need for a Palestinian state] it is your duty to call for the steps in order to reach the solution and impose the solution. Impose it. But don’t tell me it’s a vital national strategic American interest… and then not do anything.”

Finally there is Israel. In the same week that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen refused to rule out the possibility that the US will shoot down Israeli jets en route to attack Iran’s nuclear installations, and Obama again blamed Israel for the deaths of US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, Jim Jones tried to reassure Jewish Democrats that despite the administration’s hostile actions and statements, it is not hostile to Israel.

Jones’s speech was part of a very public outreach plan the administration adopted last week in the face of a groundswell of American Jewish anger at Obama for his adversarial posture towards Israel. Given that American Jews have been the Democratic Party’s most secure voting bloc since 1932, recent polls showing that the majority of American Jews oppose Obama’s treatment of Israel are a political earthquake.

According to a Quinnipiac poll published last week, a whopping 67 percent of American Jews disapprove of Obama’s handling of the situation between Israel and the Palestinians. A poll of American Jews taken by John McLaughlin earlier this month showed that a plurality of American Jews would consider voting for a candidate other than Obama in the next presidential elections.

And on Israel, American Jewish disapproval of Obama is fully consonant with the views of the general public. As the Quinnipiac poll shows, only 35 percent of Americans approve of his treatment of Israel.

Jones’s speech before the Washington Institute for Middle East Policy was a friendly affair. He waxed on dreamily about how wonderful the US’s alliance with Israel is and how much Obama values Israel. And the crowd rewarded him with a standing ovation.

But the substance of his speech made absolutely clear that while Obama and his advisors are concerned that for the first time in 80 years a significant number of American Jews may abandon the Democratic Party, they are unwilling to pay even the slightest substantive price to keep the Jews loyal to their party.

After he finished his declarations of love and his joke about crafty Jewish businessmen in Afghanistan, Jones made clear that the Obama administration continues to view Israel’s refusal to surrender more land to the Palestinians as the key reason its efforts to convince Iran to give up its nuclear program, the Syrians to quit the Iranian axis, the Palestinians and the Lebanese to quit the terror racket and the Iraqis and the Afghans to behave like Americans have all failed.

As he put it, “One of the ways that Iran exerts influence in the Middle East is by exploiting the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict. Iran uses the conflict to keep others in the region on the defensive and to try to limit its own isolation. Ending this conflict, achieving peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and establishing a sovereign Palestinian state would therefore take such an evocative issue away from Iran, Hizbullah, and Hamas.”

Jones, Obama and the rest of their gang must have been asleep when the Saudis, Egyptians, Jordanians and the rest of the Arabs told them that Iran is unrelated to the Palestinian issue and that Ira
n must be stopped from acquiring nuclear weapons regardless of the status of Israeli-Palestinian relations. This after all has been the main message communicated to Obama and his advisers since January 2009 by every Sunni-majority state in the region as well as by many Iraqi Shiites.

They must have been at the golf course when their generals in Iraq and Afghanistan warned them about Iran providing weapons and training to irregular forces killing US servicemen.

The fact that even as he faced a Jewish audience, Jones couldn’t resist the temptation to repeat the central fallacy at the root of the administration’s failed policies in the Middle East makes clear that the Obama administration fundamentally does not care that the American people as a whole and the American Jewish community specifically oppose its policies. They will continue to push their policies in the face of that opposition no matter what. And if American Jews want to leave the party, well, they shouldn’t slam the door on their way out.

The Obama administration’s treatment of New York Senator Charles Schumer this week is case in point. Schumer has been one of Obama’s most loyal supporters. If as expected Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid loses his reelection bid in November, Schumer is in line to replace him as the Democratic leader in the Senate.

Yet this week, responding to what has likely been an enormous outcry from his constituents, Schumer blasted Obama for his shabby and dangerous treatment of Israel. Rather than respond graciously to Schumer’s criticism, Obama’s spokesman Robert Gibbs dismissed it sneeringly saying, “I don’t think that it’s a stretch to say we don’t agree with what Senator Schumer said in those remarks.”

In his interview last week with Channel 2, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he has no doubt that if Obama wishes to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons he is capable of doing so. As he put it, “Barack Obama demonstrated his determination with regard to issues he felt were important, and his determination was quite impressive.  I think President Obama can show that same determination with regard to Iran.”

No doubt Netanyahu is correct. Moreover, the politics of such a move would make sense for him. Whereas Obama’s decision to ram the nationalization of the US healthcare industry through Congress against the wishes of the American public caused his personal ratings and those of his party to plummet, were Obama to decide to take on Iran, he would win the overwhelming support of the American public. Indeed, a determined and successful bid by Obama to block Iran’s nuclear aspirations could potentially block what is currently looking like a midterm election catastrophe for his party in November.

But as Gates’s memo about Iran, Clinton’s announcement that the administration will go ahead with its plan to dispatch an ambassador to Damascus, Mitchell’s latest failure with the Palestinians, Jones’s newest accusation against Israel, and the US’s strategic incoherence in Iraq and Afghanistan all show, mere politics are irrelevant to Obama. It doesn’t bother him that his most loyal supporters abandoning him. It doesn’t matter that his policies have endangered the Middle East and the world as a whole.

Obama’s refusal to acknowledge his own failures make clear that his goal is different than that of his predecessors. He is here to transform America’s place in the world, not to safeguard the world. And he will move ahead with his transformative change even if it means abetting war. He will push on with his transformative change even if it means that Iran becomes a nuclear power. And he will push on with his transformative change even if it means that US forces are forced to leave Afghanistan and Iraq in defeat.

Leftist unconcern with the Jewish vote goes all the way back to George McGovern who was criticized for not appealing to the Jewish vote just before his primary election against Hubert Humphrey in California in 1972. McGovern wanted to internationalize Jerusalem so Obama’s policy of ending Jewish sovereignty in Jerusalem is nothing new.
However Obama’s policy is working, on Bibi the Dhimmi who says one thing in public, boldly declaring that Jerusalem is not negotiable, and does another in private by freezing construction in Jerusalem by simply not convening the necessary committees and there are apparently a slew of other concessions that Bibi the Dhimmi has not told us about.

President Obama is barreling on because he will probably be a “lame duck” after the new Congress begins in January. Consequently, he will attempt to quickly accomplish his agenda while there is still a Democratic majority. The President is not concerned with whom he alienates because his progressive programs and Nobel Peace Prize will be part of his legacy. Like Mr. Carter, President Obama appears to lack the political skills to win a second term. And Israel might pay heavily because the Obama Administration misread signals from Tehran and Damascus.

I think the time to attack Iran is now. We have forces on either side of them in Iraq and Afghanistan. By attacking Iran now we will open up the fissures across the Middle East that need to addressed before we end the Iraqi and Afghan Wars. We should destroy Iran’s ability to interfere with shipping in the Persian Gulf and as thoroughly as possible destroy Iran’s nuclear and military installations…to say that our country can’t simultaneously manage conflicts in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan and against Hezbollah and Hamas is ridiculous…we also have Israel, perhaps our greatest ally, to help us win this conflict…war is about being at the right place with overwhelming force at the right time…

Barak Hussein Obama is a classic example of Narcissistic Personality Disorder defined by the World Health Organization’s ICD 10:
    * Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
    * Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
    * Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
    * Requires excessive admiration
    * Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
    * Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
    * Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
    * Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
    * Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.
What in the world were Americans, both Jew and Gentile, thinking when a majority of them cast their vote for this man for president of the United States?

    Ms. Glick,
I admire your ability to write compelling and passionate argument in support of the Jewish state.
I do not admire your persistent indulgence in one particular fantasy that you seem to believe supports Israel: the idea that Obama is alone in laying all of the world’s evils on Israel’s self-defense.
In this essay, for instance, you wrote “Jones, Obama and the rest of their gang must have been asleep when the Saudis, Egyptians, Jordanians and the rest of the Arabs told them that Iran is unrelated to the Palestinian issue….” I’m afraid the one asleep at the switch in this instance is you. Although this phenomenon has somehow managed to singularly escaped your attention, Jordan’s monarch has been busily campaigning with his “all roads lead to Jerusalem” message, telling whomever will listen that hunger in Africa, breast cancer, global warming and the suffering of innocent kittens are, together with toothaches and all of the worlds other shortcomings, the natural and direct consequence of Israel’s continuing and unacceptable failure to mollify her neighbors who behave toward her in accordance with their conviction that she has no right to exist.
In future, I hope you will adapt your essays to comport with the facet of reality you have thus far inexplicably denied. The Arab world is fully on board with Obama’s whacked out scapegoating of Jerusalem (or, as they call it, Tel Aviv).

So what is Israel to do in the Age of Obama? I think you spelled it out very well in your post Exploiting the Crisis with Washington which was essentially a Declaration of Independence from the treacherous aims of American foreign policy that are highly detrimental to Israel’s security.
Israel must strike out on its own regardless of what Washington wants. The warning about “returning Syria to the Stone Age” if the Scuds it has transferred to Hezbollah are used against Israel is a good start. Even better would be a pre-emptive strike on Syria.
Israel has to start preparing the battlefield so it is in the most advantageous position when war comes. Eliminating Iran’s client states is an absolute necessity. When seen in this context the noise coming from Abbas is the whine of a mosquito about to be swatted.
The United States is dealing itself out as a serious force in the Mideast or anywhere else for that matter. The multi-cultural fantasies and the peace at any cost mentality that permeate the foreign policy establishment and increasing the U.S. military can lead only to war. America has dropped the reins as a world leader. It is time for Israel to pick them up.

Obama is a man “from the street” picked by powerfull men behind like Zbig Brzezinski, Soros, David Rockefeller.
Obama is a puppet and nothing more. He’d nothing noticible to say…so far. He is just messing around without clear goal(s) and,I guess, it gets worse.
    Iran:
The big picture is about Saudis oil and control of entire persian(!) region. The A-bomb is a tool (very usefull, indeed) in hands of Iran to divert attention from the real ambition, which is creation of Persian Empire (domination of Sunnis by Shia.
Russia and China understand that and they will do nothing to prevent it. Those countries support Iran and are the real enemies of the “free world”.
Israel; Israel has no options except to act (not talk)in a strong way. “Palestinian” issue is another “smoke curtain”. Nobody cares about it and nobody tells the historical thruth about “palestinian people” and the land of Palestine.
We’ve no strong leaders in the (still) free world. Europe is a lost case and USA is on the way. Bush was a disaster and the present boy_president is a true nightmare for all of us.

Amoral America easily dumps Israel to keep it’s head above the flood of damn Islam.Israel is still in deep denial to face this reality as Abdul Mitchell bring the latest poodle in Jerusalem the terms of surrender.
The spineless, beggar Netanyahu has folded to Washington’s demands on E.Jerusalem proving AGAIN and again that he serves dangerous, failed foreign interests above Israel’s security and national interests.
With all these facts on the table why does Israel continue to dance with the devil ?

Unlike other American Presidents who had an antagonistic relationship with Israel, Obama has picked his fight when there is a serious issue in play, the Iranian nuclear program. However bad Obama may relate to Israel, it is the Iranian nuclear program and it’s potential to destabilize the entire Middle East with terrorism, to destabilize the International Community by disrupting oil supplies from the Persian Gulf, and to empower Hamas, Hizballa, Syria, and even the PLO to wage a war on Israel which he should be taking seriously, and he isn’t.
My feeling is that Obama does in fact want to see Israel’s immediate enemies start a war on the Jewish State because he believes that only massive bloodshed will be enough to bring both sides, but mostly Israel, back to the negotiating table and only huge numbers of Israeli casaulties will be effective in forcing Israel to realize the necessity of making far reaching concessions to the Palestinians and the Arab world.
Regarding his outreach to the American Jewish Community, he is probably banking on the views of his JStreet supporters and his two Jewish White House advisors, David Axelrod and Rahm Emmanuel that all he has to do is make some nice I love Israel noises and all will be forgiven. Besides, these advisors are fully aware that Jewish voters are overall pretty small in number, while Democratic voters who are either indifferent to the fate of Israel or who actively want to see Israel “put in her proper place” are far greater in voter strength and thus Obama should reach out to them.
Obama may well not care about reelection or the reaction of the Democratic Jewish voter to his hostility to Israel but never forget that he is a conniving and manipulative politician getting advice from some of the best political minds in the business and that nothing he does is spontaneous or off the cuff.
His anti Israel and pro Arab stance, as well as his reluctance to actually tackle the thorny Iranian nuclear problem are all the result of thoroughly discussed, well thought out, and fully documented staff and advisory meetings, and these policies are what have ensued.
This is what should scare all of us.

I think the fundamental assumption that Obama’s policy is failing is wrong. I think that on the contrary, what is happening in Syria, Iran, etc…is deliberate and is brilliantly being played by Obama and his team. He DOES want to weaken the US, he DOES want Iran to assume de facto leadership in the middle east, he DOES want Israel to be weakened (or G-d forbid destroyed). Don’t forget that his first call as a president was to Abu Mazen (a holocaust denier), his first major foreign policy speech was in Cairo (the capital of a country which may soon be run by the Muslim Brotherhood) and on 2 separate occasions, he did everything he could to paralyze any action against Muslim terrorists (in Fort Hood and the Xmas underwear bomber). If all of this is not a definite trend, I don’t know what is.
If one looks at Obama’s actions in the context of a stealth push for increasing Islam’s dominance, then all his actions make perfect sense and are being executed masterfully.

Thank you Caroline! Of course none of this will be reported by the leftist establishment media as they continue to stand shoulder to shoulder forming a protective ring around their man hussein obama.

If you believe the present situation to be bad, try and imagine what will transpire should the racist, anti-Semitic, America hating leftist radical hussein obama be re-elected.

As in 1994 when sweeping GOP Congressional mid-term victories paved the road for Clinton’s re-election, so too may GOP victories in the upcoming Congressional mid-terms pave the way for hussein’s re-election in 2012.

With two Supreme Court nominations already “in the bag” and justice Ginsberg in failing health, hussein will likely get 3 Supreme Court nominations in his first term. In his second term, hussein will likely get to replace one or more of the ageing conservative justices with a fellow traveling leftist radical.

Until Republicans can articulate a clear vision for the nation other than being against hussein obama, the best outcome for Israel, America and the World may be for Democrats to retain a post 11/2010 razor thin majority in Congress and therefore own consequences of all policies going into 2012.

Hopefully, the GOP will then be able to produce a 2012 presidential candidate capable of leading and articulating a clear vision for the nation. Unfortunately, memories of 1996 and Bob Dole have me laying awake at night.

During Obama’s watch, Iran will become a nuclear power and he is not going to stop it.
His agenda is make America a weak nation so that it will never become a factor in Middle East. He will do everything to weaken Israel during the next 2 and half years. But that’s enough damage for both countries for years to come and recover. This guy has the mind of Saddam Hussain. Sooner the Americans understand this, the better it is for all.
What I cannot understand is, how in the world, Hillary Clinton is fooled by this guy and she is bidding his cause all around the world. She claimed to be the good friend of Israel and what she is doing now doesn’t match. I worry much about Israel now. Only hope is now weakening the administration during the next November election which I hope the American people will do.

You do a great job showing the total failure of Obama’s foreign policy, listing one failure after the other emphasizes the sheer incompetence of Obama’s ideological world-view & the dangers it poses to both American & Israeli security.
But, you fail to give any analysis of Netanyahu’s policies in response. Where is the Netanyahu gov’t. taking us? What positive advantage has Netanyahu’s policies brought us?
To tell you the truth, I don’t care any more about Obama – I take his hostility to Israel & Jews generally as a given.
So, given circumstances, does Netanyahu have a coherent & realistic strategy to deal with the threats facing us?

PLEASE READ EVERYTHING ANDRE WROTE (above). In some areas Obama’s policies reveal a quest for power; in others he is deliberately self-destructive (weakening America); but in all cases he acts according to the plan.
    PREDICTIONS:
I believe that a major war involving Israel, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, et. al., is now inevitable. Israel will be victorious with the use of nuclear weapons but that victory will greatly intensify Israel’s isolation in the international community and will probably lead to a huge wave of anti-Semitism throughout the world. This, in turn, will result in a massive wave of Jewish immigration to Israel. I wouldn’t be surprised if the US cut off diplomatic relations with Israel as a result of an Israeli first strike against Iran.
But of course these are merely educated guesses so you’re quite welcome to question them if you wish.

Obama and his crew are out to lunch.
No they are not. They are on a quest. An Islamic quest to demoralize the sovereign Jew and prove that the sovereign jewish state is actually subservient to the Muslim authority, as enforced by the Muslim president and his dhimmi henchmen.
The way to deal with it is to turn the tables on Obama and his Jewish dhimmis, both in the States and Israel, and agree wholeheartedly that the Iranian attidude and intentions are exactly in line with the Arab-Palestinian attitudes and intentions. Ahmadinejad is merely the spokesperson for the Muslim world, and its intentions vis-a-vis Israel. Iran’s genocidal preparations are but an extension of the PLO-Hamas_Syrian plans and preparations. Since annihilation is non negotiable, both Iran and the Arabs are outside the scope of negotiaitions. Once you make that equivalence, Ahmadinejad=Abbas=haniyah=al-hussieni=Hitler clear, then the road to be taken is crystal clear, and it does not go through the engagement and negotiation stations.
Call the spade a spade. Obama is a Muslim out to achieve the Muslim agenda, breakfast lunch and dinner. The Muslim agenda is the demise of Israel, no less

As clever people they must see that what they are doing is destroying Israel and destroying the West.
Therefore, as they persist in their policies, one can only assume that this is their intention.
What is a group that is hostile to the West and western norms and standards doing controlling the most powerful state in the West?
Do we realise that something is dreadfully wrong here?

I see that Sarkozy has come out in full support of Obama and is blaming Netanyahu for the failure of peace talks.
The fact that Sarkozy also refuses to be realistic about the true cause of violence in the Middle East, and that he continues to blame those who only seek to live in peace (Israelis) for the violence, indicates that the lying war against Israel is in full, high pressure, demonise Israel, mode.
As said above, anyone with eyes, never mind intelligence, can see where the violence is coming from.
The only conclusion one can draw from the hostile words and actions of those opposed to Isarael is that they desire the destruction of Israel and western, liberal, democracy, to be replaced with Medieaval, authoritarian rule.

Instead of putting all the blame on the Israelis for the problems with Iran, how about showing some guts and balls to stand up the Iranians and call a spade a spade. No Jones you and your boss barry the community organizer feel more comfortable taking it out on a good friend. Gutless bastards.
Hang in there Israel, this is a one term president (impostor) and by the end of the year the liberal left wing democrats will be sent home to seek new employment.

Quote: exposed the bitter truth that in the face of the most acute foreign policy problem they face, Obama and his crew are out to lunch.
When not out for lunch, he is playing golf.
do not understand Syrian intentions. No one does, and until we get to that question we can never get to the root of the problem,” the official told the magazine.
Obama is either clueless or he is simply giving Syria and Iran much needed time.
Syria is an Arab Muslim country. The idea that Israel, a Jewish state can exist in what is considered by Muslims to be Holy Muslim land, is totally unacceptable to any Arab Muslim.
The tragedy is that successive US administrations have tied the hands of the US military to such an extent, that the poor US military are now looking for excuses when they start to lose any war. In Afghanistan, the US is not only blaming Israel, but also India for its impending defeat. The reasoning goes that Muslims become irrational because US favours Israel in its continued existence, or its occupation of so-called Palestinian territories. Israel must therefore cede all territories that the Palestinians demand. A similar reasoning requires India to cede all Kashmir to Pakistan.
Coincidence or not, it is worth noting that the Obama administration requires only non-Muslim nations to cede territory to Muslim nations.

Obama is doing exactly what he planned – weaken the US from the inside and out. he wants a world where all countries (the UN) have the same influence, and the US is just a helper in that end.
the nightmare is obvious, a weak USA means a powerful Iran,China, Russia, and the world steps backward into deep darkness.
Israel has one tiny state amount hundreds of millions of Arab/Muslims. if anyone should be getting a break its her, and not the rabid blood thirsty Hamas/PA/PLO terror networks
